select shears, fixture cutter, routing/machining, abrasive, thermal, cryogenic, or another qualified method;
protect the final trim allowance.
Do not widen the 66090 V by grinding or take uncontrolled repeated bites into sound plastic.
Protect brittle corners and notch-sensitive features
Sharp internal corners, thin walls, knit/weld regions, snap arms, living hinges, and bosses can crack from a local tool load.
Support close to the feature without forcing it. Use short strokes and stop before the stress concentration.
Inspect under appropriate light/magnification and the part’s functional test.

Keep the V clean without applying unapproved oil/solvent to a downstream bonding or coating surface. Do not use compressed air to scatter fragments into assemblies, machinery, or breathing zones. Vacuum/wipe/ionize only through the controlled process.
Inspect recesses, bosses, connector cavities, and textured surfaces where trim can hide. A visually clean part can fail when one string reaches a seal, switch, weld, or paint line.
If the knife chips, account for the missing edge before releasing affected parts. If glass/mineral-filled trim produces sharp fragments or dust, reassess containment/PPE and whether hand cutting remains appropriate.
Plan short-run and mixed-part changeovers
Hand deflashing is often chosen for low volume or frequent change, but changeover still requires control.
For each part family maintain:
At changeover clear prior trim and parts, verify fixture/gauge, inspect the edge, load the correct instruction, and run first-piece. Do not reuse a map merely because two molded shells look similar.
Different colors of the same resin may reveal/hide whitening and texture marks differently. Different fills/lots can change abrasion and brittleness. Treat these as process-defined changes, not universal equivalence.
Decide whether another deflashing process is better
Move away from the V trial when:
flash is broad/flat or hidden;
part is too brittle/notch-sensitive;
filled material destroys/chips edges;
feature is too small/dense for safe support;

finish needs controlled machining/shearing;
operator must cut near critical inserts/features;
rework/inspection burden dominates.
Compare fixture shear, dedicated gate cutter, die, router/machining, abrasive, thermal/ultrasonic, tumbling, cryogenic, automated trim, or mold/process correction through engineering.
Each alternative can add heat, dust, stress, dimensional, surface, guarding, or capital consequences. The selection is part/material/volume-specific.
A hybrid can use another process for bulk excess and 66090 only for an authorized final witness. Qualify that exact sequence; the knife may contact a different surface/geometry after bulk removal.
Maintain without inventing a grind

If the knife was used on different plastics, verify that cleaning and edge condition are suitable before the next product. A residue harmless to one part may interfere with another part’s paint, bond, weld, optics, or cleanliness.
