How to Cut Webbing and Jute Strapping — Complete Shop Guide
Hyde does not specify a webbing fiber, grade, width, tensile or elongation value, cut length, installed tension, stretch percentage, strip count, spacing, weave, folded return, fastener, allowable fray, end finish, heat-seal process, furniture load, or release test. This guide makes a controlled cut.

What this job is—and the result it can honestly claim
The intended result is narrow:
the correct identified stock is cut at the authorized mark;
the retained piece has the required orientation and allowance;
the end is square or otherwise matches the maker-controlled pattern;
the weave is not dragged, crushed, or unnecessarily frayed;
stored tension has not been released into a person, tool, fastener, spring, or frame;
A neat cut is not proof that the selected webbing is suitable, the strip is long enough, the edge is finished, the installation tension is correct, the fasteners will hold, the frame is sound, or the finished seat can support a person. The cutter must not convert appearance into capacity.
This is primarily an upholstery and flexible-material cutting guide. “Webbing” is also used for seat belts, fall-arrest harnesses, lifting slings, cargo restraints, recovery straps, climbing equipment, parachute systems, medical or mobility restraints, child-restraint components, and other rated assemblies. Those are not ordinary cut-to-length stock. See the refusal gate below.
Hyde 60090 — the sole registered cutter
Hyde's current maker page identifies the family as Square Point Knives and lists the relevant variant at 4" × 1" × .065". For that size Hyde specifies a hardened 16-gauge high-carbon steel blade, ground and tempered, a smooth hardwood handle, and a blade riveted and locked with a nickel-plated ferrule. The accepted catalog record names it Regular Square Point Knife.
On supported, lightly tensioned flexible stock, a keen straight edge can slice across the weave without the lifting action of ordinary shears. The square end also avoids pretending to be a piercing point. Those are geometry and trade-use observations—not a Hyde capacity rating, an anti-puncture guarantee, or permission to cut over a finished frame.
The 60090 is a maintained exposed-edge knife with a bare wood handle. It has no retracting mechanism and no built-in finger guard. Stop and route the job to the approved process; do not silently add the guarded 60120 or another tool to the exact union.
What the 60090 does not supply
The registered knife does not supply:
a cutting board, guide, clamp, stop, or restraint;
a webbing stretcher or a tension measurement;
a staple, tack, clip, sewing pattern, or attachment rating;
a way to restrain springs, frames, or recoiling installed strap;
a hot cut or sealed edge;
fiber identification or compatibility with heat;
a cut-resistant glove, eye protection, or other PPE;
a structural test, proof load, working-load limit, or finished-article release.
Those are external systems. They must be named rather than smuggled into the knife claim.
At the bench, identify which document controls each decision:

Rowley shows a different project workflow using jute webbing, a jute stretcher, a long-nose stapler, and shears. These are useful examples of why the knife does not own the installation. Neither example becomes a universal recipe for every webbing, chair, frame, staple, tack, or restoration.
Stop before cutting when any of the following is unknown:
fiber and construction;
exact end use;
stock identity, grade, width, or lot where traceability matters;
measurement condition—relaxed, pre-tensioned, fitted around hardware, or taken from an approved pattern;
cut line and retained side;
required end allowance and end treatment;
permitted installation tension or extension;
frame and attachment disposition;
whether installed webbing is storing energy or supporting springs/components;
“Jute,” “nylon,” “poly,” “seat webbing,” “elastic,” “sagless,” and “strap” are not complete specifications. Similar-looking products can have different stretch, finish, heat response, attachment, and service limits.
Absolute refusal for rated and load-critical webbing
Do not use this guide to shorten, repair, re-end, splice, reweb, or release for service any of the following:
motor-vehicle seat-belt or child-restraint webbing;
fall-arrest, work-positioning, rescue, climbing, or life-safety equipment;
synthetic web slings, hoisting or rigging gear;
cargo-control, towing, vehicle-recovery, winch, or tie-down assemblies;
parachute, aviation, marine-safety, medical-lift, wheelchair-restraint, or animal-restraint systems where a failure can injure;
any labeled, serialized, certified, proof-tested, working-load-rated, or otherwise safety-critical assembly;
any unknown webbing whose prior use or capacity cannot be positively identified.
Cutting and sewing replacement seat-belt webbing can constitute manufacture of a regulated seat-belt assembly under NHTSA's interpretation of FMVSS 209. OSHA requires damaged synthetic web slings with cuts, melting, charring, broken stitches, or related damage to be removed from service; qualifying repair is manufacturer/equivalent work followed by proof testing, not a bench trim. OSHA's fall-protection guidance similarly says significant cuts, tears, alterations, or additions require withdrawal and qualified evaluation.
The right response is to isolate the assembly, preserve its label and history, and obtain the original maker's replacement or written repair route. Do not “clean up” a damaged end, move a buckle, cut out a defect, flame-seal fuzz, or sew a new termination. A hot-sealed edge can look finished while its load path, heat-affected fibers, stitch geometry, hardware compatibility, and certification are destroyed.
Ordinary seating webbing also carries load. This guide may prepare material for an authorized upholstery repair, but it does not decide that an old rail, glued joint, tack line, spring system, or finished seat is structurally fit.
Read the material and the stored energy
Natural jute, cotton, or hemp
Jute is a natural bast fiber. A cold knife severs it; heat does not melt it into a fused edge. A cut jute end can shed yarns or unravel if it is handled roughly or left exposed. The approved upholstery construction normally manages that end through its specified allowance, folded return, attachment, cover layer, or other maker-defined termination.
Heat can char natural fiber and create a fire or smoke hazard without producing a designed thermoplastic seal. Added chemicals can stiffen the fold, contaminate later work, change fire behavior, or conceal damage.
Synthetic webbing
Nylon, polyester, polypropylene, acrylic, and blended webbings can look alike while responding differently to tension and heat. A cold 60090 cut may leave an end that ravels. Whether that end is turned, bound, stitched, heat cut, ultrasonically cut, molded, or discarded is maker-controlled.
Sailrite's Edge Hotknife manual expressly limits that tool to synthetic rope, webbing, bands, fabrics, and cords, and says not to use it on natural fibers such as cotton or hemp. Its manual also requires a suitable insulating cutting surface or foot, ventilation, intermittent operation, cooling before handling, and avoidance of flammable gases, fumes, solvents, PVC/PVC-coated material, skin, cloth, and flammables.
Never heat the 60090, draw it through a flame, use it as a hotknife, or touch a cold-cut end to an uncontrolled lighter. A heat-seal requirement routes the job to the identified synthetic material's approved process and exact heat-tool instructions.
Elastic and rubberized webbing
Elastic or rubberized furniture webbing stores more energy as it is extended. Its relaxed length, installed extension, clip or staple system, and permitted cutting method come from its maker and the furniture design. Do not copy a percentage from another webbing. Do not infer tension from the feel of old, fatigued material.
Installed jute and spring-support webbing
Traditional jute may be nonelastic compared with synthetic webbing, but an installed strip can still be taut, and it may support coil springs, stuffing, or a stressed frame. Cutting it can:
snap the free end back toward the attachment;
eject a tack, staple, clip, or broken fiber;
let a spring shift, tip, or extend;
unload one rail and move another;
release accumulated dust and brittle fibers;
transfer load suddenly into the remaining strips;
conceal or worsen a cracked frame joint.
“Natural fiber” does not mean “no stored energy.”
Bench, knife, workholding, and PPE gate
Prepare the cutting station
Use a clean, stable bench and a sacrificial cutting board that supports the full strap width. Remove tacks, staples, wire fragments, grit, hardened glue, and deep grooves that can chip or steer the edge. Support the roll and retained length so neither hangs from the bench and pulls the mark out of square.
Mark with a method approved for the material and finished article. Do not measure an elastic strip while casually pulling it. Measure in the exact relaxed or controlled condition named by the maker.
Use clamps, stops, or another approved restraint on both sides of the cut where practical. Apply only enough bench tension to lay the weave flat and prevent bunching. Bench tension is not installation pre-tension. Never ask another person to pull the strap while the knife travels between their hands.
Inspect and control the 60090
Before every use:
inspect the hardwood handle for cracks, looseness, contamination, or a damaged contour;
inspect the ferrule and riveted blade connection;
inspect the blade for corrosion, chips, cracks, bends, a rolled edge, or residue;
confirm a keen edge on matching scrap, not on a finger;
remove a defective or dull knife from service;
plan a stroke that goes away from the body and all hands and ends in the board;
cover or securely store the edge whenever it is not in the operator's hand.
Hyde's own hand-knife guidance says to keep the blade clean, put it on a hard flat surface before wiping it, cut away from the body, reject damaged or dull knives, sheath a knife when not in use, use guards where required, and never catch a falling knife.
PPE follows the hazard assessment
For occupational work, the employer determines PPE from the task, material, duration, workholding, and environment. OSHA requires hand protection selection to reflect the actual hazard and performance needed. Assess at minimum:
well-fitting cut-resistant protection for the non-knife hand and exposed arm where compatible with the task;
safety glasses with side protection for brittle fiber, hidden wire, staple/tack, spring, or recoil hazards;
an apron or body protection where a deflected or dropped blade can reach the torso or legs;
closed-toe or safety footwear appropriate to tools, hardware, and furniture handling;
dust controls and respiratory protection only where the material assessment and workplace program require them;
separate heat-resistant hand protection, ventilation, fire controls, and eye/skin protection for an approved hotknife process.
Cut-resistant does not mean cut-proof. A glove never becomes a clamp, and no PPE makes a toward-hand stroke acceptable. Keep bystanders outside both the blade path and the predicted recoil envelope.
Cold-cut new stock with the 60090
This sequence begins only after the material, length, allowance, end treatment, and use are authorized.
Condition and identify the stock. Bring it to the maker-specified measurement condition. Record roll, lot, face, direction, or stripe orientation when the work requires traceability or matched appearance.
Square the reference. Do not assume the roll end is square or undistorted. Establish a true cross-web reference from the approved template, square, or pattern.
Mark finished line and allowance separately. If a folded return or handling tail is required, the cut line includes it. The attachment line is not automatically the cut line.
Lay the webbing flat. Put the full width on the board. Remove twists. Align warp yarns without stretching the strip beyond the defined measurement condition.
Restrain retained piece and waste. Keep hands behind the cutting edge and away from where the blade will exit. Use fixtures rather than fingers near the line.
Present the blade low. Set the straight edge across the marked line at a low slicing attitude. Do not stab with the square end or chop downward.
Make the controlled draw. Draw away from the body through the width, letting a length of keen edge sever the weave. A single continuous pass is the target only when matching scrap proves it parts the stock without unsafe force. If it does not, stop and correct edge, support, tension, or process—do not saw wildly or add body weight.
Control breakthrough. Reduce force as the last yarns part. Let the blade finish in the sacrificial board. Keep the waste restrained until the blade is down and clear.
Set the knife down safely. Do not inspect the end with the blade still in hand.
Inspect both ends. Check length, squareness, orientation, weave distortion, pulled yarns, fray, contamination, scorch, and any hidden reinforcement. Preserve required labeling.
The cold cut is not automatically the finished end.
If a straightedge is used, clamp it where possible, put it on the retained side when the pattern allows, and keep fingers behind its edge. It guides the line; it is not hand armor.
Removing installed webbing: tension and recoil control
Removal is a different operation from cutting relaxed roll stock.
Take the article out of use. Remove every person, load, cushion, loose component, or moving mechanism that can act on the support system. Stabilize the furniture so it cannot tip or rack.
Expose the whole system. Remove covers only by the approved teardown method until both attachment ends, crossing strips, springs, clips, tacks/staples, rails, and frame joints can be inspected. Do not blind-cut through a dust cover.
Document before alteration. Photograph and mark direction, over-under order, strip count, spacing, attachments, folded returns, spring ties, and existing defects. An old failed layout is evidence, not automatically a replacement pattern.
Identify dependent loads. Determine what each strip holds and what will move when it releases.
Prefer controlled unfastening. When the approved teardown procedure allows tacks, staples, or clips to be removed safely, releasing the attachment can dissipate tension more predictably than severing the span. Use the correct removal tool; the 60090 is not a tack puller or pry bar.
If a cut is authorized, capture both sides. Restrain retained and waste segments independently, reduce tension as far as the system permits, clear the recoil line, and cut at the specified sacrificial location over a support. Do not hold a taut strip in one hand and cut toward that hand.
Do not invent a center-out, edge-in, or all-one-direction sequence; the spring and frame construction controls it.
Stop on movement. Frame flex, opening joints, cracking, fastener creep, spring shift, unexpected clip movement, or a stronger-than-predicted recoil ends the operation. Re-secure what can be safely secured and obtain repair direction.
Quarantine removed material. Keep representative samples and labels until the replacement specification is settled. Render discarded pieces unmistakably unusable when confusion with approved stock is possible.
Never cut webbing while someone is sitting on the article, while a machine or mechanism is energized, or while a suspended or restrained load depends on the strap.
Fray and heat-seal decisions
Acceptable edge is a specification, not a visual preference
Inspect a cold-cut end under good light:
Are warp and fill yarns severed cleanly rather than pulled into loops?
Has the width narrowed or flared?
Are yarns withdrawing from the body of the strap?
Did the blade drag a coating, elastic strand, rubber filament, tracer, or hidden reinforcement?
Will the cut end remain exposed, or is it captured in an approved return?
A few loose natural fibers on disposable waste do not mean the retained end is acceptable. Conversely, a glossy melted bead does not prove a synthetic end is structurally sound.
Natural fiber: no heat-seal claim
For jute, cotton, hemp, or an unidentified natural blend, use the specified cold cut and mechanical termination.
Synthetic fiber: separate heat process
If the exact webbing maker requires a fused end, transfer the part to a qualified hot-cut station:
verify exact fiber/coating compatibility;
use the named hotknife, blade, cutting foot/surface, duty cycle, and electrical controls;
remove solvents, dust, flammables, and uninvolved cloth from the area;
trial the cut on same-lot scrap;
control temperature and travel so the end seals without excessive smoke, a wide hard bead, discoloration, or loss of dimension;
cool fully before handling or measuring;
inspect to the maker's edge criterion.
Sailrite says smoke during its cordless hotknife cut indicates travel that is too slow or a blade that is too hot; the response is to reduce blade temperature by cycling the trigger. That troubleshooting belongs only to that named tool. It is not a universal temperature recipe.
No heat treatment is allowed on a rated sling, restraint, harness, or other safety assembly merely to arrest fray. OSHA treats melting or charring on synthetic web slings as removal-from-service damage, not a cosmetic condition to blend.
Inspection, handoff, and release
Record or verify as the work order requires:
job/article identity;
webbing maker, product, fiber, grade, width, roll/lot, and orientation;
source document and revision for length and allowance;
relaxed or controlled measurement condition;
cutter identity and 60090 condition;
actual cut length and end geometry;
fray, distortion, contamination, or discovered reinforcement;
required next end-treatment process;
any installed-tension or frame finding;
For upholstery, the next operation may be a folded return, maker-specified attachment, weaving, or controlled tensioning. Keep “cut accepted” separate from “installation accepted” and “article released.” Installation acceptance still requires the specified grid, tension, attachment, frame observation, and inspection. Finished-article capacity remains outside this guide.
Failure modes—symptom, cause, response

History—the old support plane and the later sealed edge
Interwoven webbing is not a modern shortcut. A Smithsonian-hosted study of eighteenth-century Philadelphia easy chairs documents surviving foundation upholstery with plain-weave strips crossing front-to-back and side-to-side beneath sackcloth and stuffing.
Jute nevertheless became one of the major natural fibers of industrial production. FAO identifies India and Bangladesh as the dominant production region and records jute's use in hessian, carpet backing, floor covering, and upholstery-related textiles. A current French webbing maker, STN Tressage, describes weaving jute upholstery strap in its own workshops and its use as a support base for seats, backs, springs, and cushions. Those facts explain the material's place in traditional upholstery; they do not supply a universal grade or tension.
The Hyde knife arrived from a neighboring trade. The same geometry migrated into upholstery, textile, rubber, and belt work.
Synthetic webbing and electric hot cutting added a later branch. Thermoplastic fibers can be severed and fused in one controlled operation, which is why modern hotknife makers build dedicated webbing cutters.
Does “single-stroke severing” mean force the knife through at once? No. It describes the clean continuous slicing result on suitable, supported stock with a keen edge. If same-lot scrap does not part safely, stop and correct the process.
How tight should jute be while I cut it? Only flat enough at the bench not to bunch, with both sides restrained. Installed tension is a separate maker/furniture specification.
How tight should I install upholstery webbing? This guide does not set that value. Use the exact webbing and furniture-system instructions; inspect the frame before applying tension.
Can I measure elastic webbing while pulling it by hand? Only if the maker specifies that exact measurement method. Otherwise use the named relaxed or controlled condition.
Can I heat-seal jute? Not under this guide. Jute is a natural fiber, not the synthetic material the cited hotknife maker authorizes.
Can I cold-cut nylon or polyester with the 60090? Physically, a proven cold cut may sever suitable stock, but its end may require a separate maker-approved termination. Do not call it finished merely because it is square.
Can I use a lighter on a synthetic end? Not as an improvised substitute. Use the exact maker-approved heat process with ventilation, fire controls, and material compatibility.
Can I replace vehicle seat-belt webbing or trim a lifting sling? No. Isolate and route it to the original manufacturer or legally competent qualified process.
Can this guide approve a rewebbed chair for use? No. It only controls the cut.
What if shop policy requires a guarded knife? The 60090 is bare-handled. This exact union cannot satisfy that policy; route the job to the approved process rather than adding an unregistered sibling.
What if the installed strap recoils harder than expected? Stop, clear and stabilize the system, inspect attachments/frame/springs, and obtain a revised removal plan. Do not continue by cutting the rest quickly.

Select those before turning this guide into a production traveler.
Cut acceptance: obtain maker limits for squareness, length tolerance, pulled yarns, fray, edge hardness, discoloration, and allowable re-cut.
Installed removal: obtain the furniture-specific stored-energy and unloading sequence where webbing supports coil springs, elastic members, moving hardware, or a questionable frame.
PPE: glove performance, arm/body protection, eye protection, dust control, and any heat-process PPE require the employer's hazard assessment and exact task conditions.
Hot cut: identify exact synthetic fiber/coating and approved equipment. The cited Sailrite manual does not authorize jute, cotton, hemp, PVC/PVC-coated material, open-flame sealing, or the heating of a Hyde knife.
History: Hyde's own history surfaces use both 1870 and 1875; retain “early-to-mid 1870s” until resolved. The Smithsonian chair evidence proves historic interwoven webbing, not that every surviving strip was jute.
