How to Cut Underlayment and Wrap to Length
“Underlayment,” “wrap,” and “protective sheet” are categories, not one material system. Hyde establishes tool identity and blade-length difference—not material compatibility.

Job: identify and condition a roll material; establish an authorized crosscut; support the roll and both pieces; draw-cut from an exposed edge; then inspect, label, and hand off the separated piece.
Result: the piece meets its approved line and edge criteria; the roll and protected surfaces are intact; identity and orientation reach the next operation.
Time: the cut may be brief, but identification, handling, layout, trial, and inspection control the cycle.
Difficulty: moderate at a clear bench; advanced on wide, heavy, slippery, reinforced, wind-loaded, roof-staged, or finish-sensitive goods.

Decide whether this cutting method belongs
Identify the exact material
Keep the wrapper, core label, lot information, purchase record, or job traveler with the roll. Record the maker, product name, intended use, size, face or printed-side orientation, lot where required, and the current technical, installation, and safety instructions. Do not identify a product from color, texture, apparent thickness, printed grid, backing paper, or the word “wrap.”
The category includes dissimilar papers, felts, films, foams, coated or reinforced sheets, and self-adhered membranes. A successful cut through one does not qualify another.
Stop and route the job when:
the roll or offcut cannot be positively identified;
the current material instructions prohibit this method or name another cutting process;
the material has unknown reinforcement, embedded wire, abrasive mineral content, adhesive, release liner, coating, or contamination;
a test cut stretches, tears, delaminates, gums the blade, sheds an uncontrolled exposure, or requires unsafe force;
the material is under tension, still connected to moving equipment, exposed to wind, or cannot be supported;
the finished piece belongs to a rated or approved assembly and the required cutting or edge detail is missing; or
the operation requires an internal opening, curve, notch, slit, roofing valley detail, wall opening, pipe boot, flooring fit, or installed-system repair rather than the straight crosscut this row owns.
Separate the cut plan from the installation plan
The cut plan answers: which roll, which line, which retained piece, which knife, which support, and which inspection. The installation plan answers: orientation, course direction, overlaps, laps, seams, transitions, fasteners, adhesives, tapes, primers, terminations, drainage, ventilation, exposure time, substrate condition, and repair. This guide supplies the first workflow only.
Do not turn a neat edge into a claim of water resistance, air control, vapor control, moisture management, fire performance, slip resistance, structural capacity, thermal or acoustic performance, roof or floor approval, code compliance, warranty eligibility, or suitability for a particular substrate. Those are exact-product and exact-assembly determinations.
USG's Fiberock Floor Protector Paper supplies the same boundary: its maker calls that identified roll paper trimmable; the statement does not transfer to another sheet.
Define the piece and acceptance before unrolling
Read the work order and determine:
the controlling datum and authorized finished or rough length;
whether the measured piece or the remaining roll is the retained item;
face, roll direction, printed orientation, and any required sequence identity;
acceptable edge condition and dimensional tolerance;
whether a factory edge, field-cut edge, sealed edge, or later trimming operation is required;
who inspects and who may release, rework, or reject the cut.
Do not assume the roll end is square. Do not deduct blade thickness or add a generic allowance.
If the sheet is being cut for a building envelope or other controlled assembly, preserve enough information that the installer can connect it to the right drawing and material instructions. The cut operator does not decide where a lap starts, which side faces out, how an opening is flashed, whether a seam needs tape, or whether a trimmed edge is acceptable.
Build a stable roll-and-sheet station
Control the roll before controlling the blade
Place the roll in a cradle, on a shaft, or on a stable surface that prevents rotation.
Never straddle a loose roll, stop it with a foot, or put hands beneath a roll that can settle. Roof, edge, or wind exposure ends this bench workflow and invokes the site's roof-specific plan.
Pull out only enough material to measure and support the piece without forcing the roll to feed during the cut. Support the retained sheet and waste on the same stable plane. A hanging free end can rotate the roll, pull the line, close around the edge, or drop at breakthrough.
Protect every layer under the line
Place clean sacrificial support beneath the entire path. Do not cut on a required surface, installed membrane, remaining roll, or good stack unless that exact setup is qualified.
The square point lacks a piercing projection, but the edge can still score or cut below.
Remove screws, staples, grit, dried adhesive, splinters, burrs, previous knife fragments, and deep backing grooves. A hidden hard object can deflect or damage the edge. Never use the knife to probe beneath the material.
Arrange hands, guide, and runout
Use a rigid guide suited to the line, on the retained side where permitted, and secure it without distorting the material.
Keep the guide hand behind it and outside the slip path. Nobody holds the sheet taut across the edge. Cut away from the body into sacrificial support, with an edge-protected rest ready.
A glove is not a clamp.
Select, inspect, and qualify the exact knife
Verify the model before use. Inspect the blade, square end, edge, faces, handle, rivets, and ferrule under good light. Remove a loose, bent, cracked, chipped, severely corroded, contaminated, or otherwise uncontrollable knife from service. Do not invent a numeric inspection tolerance or field repair.
Start qualification with 60110 when its available edge travel completes a controlled trial without needing more length. Move to 60115 only when the representative setup demonstrates that its additional two inches legitimately reduce restarts or provide necessary reach while the operator retains full control. Do not select by roll width alone, and do not infer that a longer blade is sharper, stronger, safer, faster, or compatible with more materials.
Use identified material in the actual condition and orientation.
Reproduce the support, guide, restraint, blade path, and inspection method.
Start from an exposed edge; neither registered square-point knife is a plunge tool.
Make a controlled slicing draw without forcing the blade.
Stop for rising resistance, movement, stretching, tearing, gumming, delamination, reinforcement contact, or uncontrolled debris.
Park the knife, release restraint as specified, and inspect both cut pieces, the sacrificial surface, and the blade.
Record the material identity, setup, exact knife, result, and disposition where the work system requires traceability.
A passing trial releases only that exact material and configuration.
Lay out the authorized crosscut
Condition the roll as directed. Let curl, temperature, moisture, adhesive, release liner, or packaging effects settle only under the exact maker's instructions.
Establish the datum. Measure from the approved reference, not automatically from the visible roll end.
Carry orientation. Mark face, roll direction, retained piece, and waste without obscuring required printed or lot information.
Mark at more than one point. Use the approved marking tool and join the marks with the rigid guide. A marker compatible with one sheet can attack, stain, or telegraph through another.
Apply only the authorized allowance. Do not add overlap, seam, wraparound, trim, fastening, or waste dimensions from memory.
Set the guide. Recheck the dimension after restraint is applied; stretching or skew can move the line.
Support the exit. Make sure both sides remain level and the blade cannot reach the remaining roll, another layer, a finished surface, a person, or a hard fixture.
If the material must remain attached to a roll during cutting, prevent roll feed through the approved stand or brake. Never use the knife hand, guide hand, knee, or foot as the roll brake.
Make the supported draw cut
Clear the zone. Remove bystanders, loose tools, cords, packaging, and offcuts from the stroke and runout.
Read back the setup. Confirm material, datum, line, face, retained side, knife, support, inspection, and stop conditions.
Grip a dry, serviceable handle. Keep a stable stance and align the wrist and forearm for the full controlled travel.
Begin at the exposed sheet edge. Place the working edge on the authorized waste side. Do not stab or rock the square end into the field.
Present the blade for a draw. Use the trial-qualified attitude. Let edge travel sever the material; do not chop straight down or use body weight.
Follow the guide without side-loading it. Maintain controlled contact. If the guide or material moves, stop with the knife under control rather than steering harder.
Use only controllable edge travel. The purpose of the long knife is a long slicing path, not maximum reach. Reposition before balance, visibility, or hand clearance deteriorates.
Re-enter the same path when another pass is qualified. Overlap into the established cut. Do not scrub rapidly, start a parallel channel, twist the blade, pry the kerf, or tear an uncut bridge.
Support final release. Shorten and control the finishing travel so the offcut cannot pull the edge, rotate the roll, or fall into the operator.
Park the knife first. Put the edge in its designated protected rest before lifting the guide, moving either piece, touching the cut edge, or allowing the roll to rewind.
Stop immediately if resistance rises, the sheet wrinkles or stretches, the roll feeds, the guide shifts, the material closes on the blade, adhesive transfers, reinforcement appears, the edge reaches the backing unexpectedly, or the operator loses stable posture. More force does not resolve an unidentified change.
Inspect the piece, roll, station, and knife
correct material, lot, face, direction, retained side, and quantity;
length and line position by the approved measurement method;
edge continuity, straightness, junctions, bridges, tears, pulls, fray, stretch, delamination, liner damage, or coating disturbance against the exact acceptance rule;
remaining roll edge and layers for unintended scoring, distortion, contamination, or loss of identity;
sacrificial support, bench, guide, and nearby finished surfaces for contact;
knife for new damage, residue, looseness, or loss of control.
A cut that looks straight is not proof that system performance survived. Keep the manufacturer's label and installation instructions with accepted pieces where the process requires it. Quarantine uncertain, damaged, mixed, or unidentified pieces rather than assigning them a system role by appearance.
Do not apply generic tape, adhesive, sealant, heat, coating, fastener, patch, or edge treatment to “fix” the cut.
Cleanup, storage, and handoff
Segregate accepted pieces, reusable identified offcuts, rejects, release liners, and waste. Follow the material maker and local rules for dust, fibers, adhesive-bearing waste, contaminated material, and recycling. Do not dry sweep or use compressed air where the exact material or workplace method prohibits it.
Clean the knife on a stable surface with the edge controlled and the hand out of its path. Use only a cleaner approved for the residue and tool environment.
Store each fixed blade so no one can reach blindly into it.
Handoff the piece with its status, identity, orientation, applicable instructions, cut record where required, and any unresolved condition. Installation remains a separate authorized operation.
What goes wrong — diagnosis and controlled recovery
The roll turns during the stroke. Stop and park the knife. Restore a qualified stand, brake, or restraint; never arrest a moving roll with a foot or hand.
The sheet wrinkles or bunches ahead of the edge. The blade may be pushing, the guide or support may be wrong, the material may be slack, or the method may be incompatible.
The material stretches and measures short after release. Layout or hold-down tension changed the piece. Quarantine it, restore the maker-defined measurement condition, and qualify a non-distorting restraint.
The cut wanders. Stop before entering retained material. Check guide movement, skew, reference marks, blade condition, and operator reach.
A step appears at each restart. The next travel missed the established path or the material moved. Qualify indexed overlap; consider 60115 only if reduced starts are a demonstrated and controllable reason.
The blade gums or drags. Stop, identify the coating or adhesive, and use only the approved cleaning and cutting process. Never add solvent, oil, powder, or heat by guess.
A hard strand or layer stops the blade. Withdraw along the path if controlled and identify the reinforcement. Do not assume more force or a second Hyde model solves it.
The last section tears. The offcut was hanging, the line was incompletely severed, or the finishing stroke accelerated. Support both sides and qualify controlled release; do not pull pieces apart.
Use the exact product instructions and project detail; the knife guide supplies neither.
Square-point form is not a no-damage guarantee.
Force rises. Remove and inspect the knife and material. Rising force is a stop signal, not an edge-life measurement.
Product fit and sibling boundaries
Select 60115 when its longer documented blade reduces controlled restarts or provides necessary reach and the trial proves that the full setup remains manageable. No material, width, thickness, output, tolerance, safety, or durability class is assigned to either knife.
This job is true only for a straight crosscut to length from an accessible edge. It is distinct from:
long-production-trim-cuts, which owns repeat-process qualification, sampling, containment, and changeover;
cut-fabric-and-canvas-to-line, which owns textile direction, ply registration, and fabric-specific edge behavior;
trim-flexible-sheet-flush-at-the-bench, which owns an installed or assembled datum and the risk of irreversible undercut;
roofing, wall-wrap, and flooring installation guides, which own placement and assembly details;
internal openings, notches, slits, curves, and penetrations, which need their own authorized start and geometry.
No unregistered Hyde knife, hook blade, scissors, rotary cutter, power cutter, straightedge, dispenser, stand, or accessory becomes a product edge here.
History footnote
The long square-point knife predates modern synthetic wraps and underlayments. Modern membranes changed what the sheet can do, but not the operator's need to support a roll, preserve the layer below, and draw a maintained edge along a known line.
The current source set does not identify a named inventor, first date, or first use of the 60110/60115 pattern for house wrap, underlayment, or protective sheet.

Can these knives cut any house wrap or underlayment?
Identify the material, confirm its maker permits straight-blade cold cutting, and qualify the complete setup on representative stock.
Which knife should I start with?
Start the trial with 60110 unless a controlled process already names a model or the additional length of 60115 has a specific, proven benefit. Length is the only documented difference.
Can I cut directly on the remaining roll?
This guide does not authorize it. The cutting edge can damage lower layers even though the end is square. Use a qualified sacrificial separator or unroll onto a supported cutting surface, then inspect the retained roll.
How many layers can I cut at once?
A single-layer trial does not qualify multiple layers.
What overlap should I add?
None from this guide. Overlap, lap direction, seam, fastening, and trim allowances come from the exact product instructions and approved assembly.
Can I use the square point to start a slit in the middle?
This workflow starts from an exposed edge. Do not stab, rock, or twist the square end into the field.
How do I sharpen or carry these knives?
The accepted source set does not establish edge-grind geometry, a Hyde-authored sharpening method, or an approved sheath for these exact models.
Their unsupported generic material-capacity and lower-layer-protection language is not propagated.
