Understand what the notch changes
The 42020 is a retractable trapezoid-blade utility knife, but this job does not use the exposed trapezoid edge.

Inspect the 42020
With the tool pointed away from people:

Create only enough slack to present the string to the notch. Do not wrap cord around fingers to gain tension.
If controlled tension is needed to help the notch engage, use a tool/fixture and keep the line’s recoil path clear.
Never pull a tie toward your torso while cutting it.
Present the string to the captured edge
Keep the 42020’s main blade fully retracted.
Hold the knife so the notch opening faces the string and the pull will finish in open space.
Guide the loose/slack section into the notch without placing fingertips beside the opening. When necessary, use pliers or a gripper on the disposable end.

A clean cut may leave:
short loose fibers;
melted-looking synthetic filament from prior damage;

Know when another system is required

The notch’s value is precisely defined: suitable string without main-blade exposure. Protect that value by refusing adjacent jobs it does not prove.
Handle ties on equipment as an isolation problem
A string tied near a conveyor, shaft, fan, spool, baler, tensioner, or powered packaging station may be loose while the equipment is stopped yet become an entanglement path when it restarts.
Do not reach into machinery with the 42020 under a routine string-cutting instruction.
Apply the machine’s authorized shutdown and hazardous-energy procedure, including guards and restart control.
Resolve whether the string is:
a jam symptom;
an unauthorized tie;
wrapped around a moving component;
holding a guard/sensor;
evidence that maintenance is incomplete.
Cut only after authorized isolation and inspection. Remove every loose remnant from the equipment and verify the responsible person—not the cutter—controls restart.
Make an incomplete cut a safe stop
When fibers remain connected, do not pull the load apart to finish.
Keep the load supported, withdraw the 42020, inspect the notch and cord, and decide whether:
the cord doubled in the notch;
a knot/splice reached the edge;
hidden reinforcement is present;
contamination packed the edge;
tool damage occurred;
another approved cutter is required.
Do not transfer the half-cut line to an exposed utility blade while maintaining tension.
If a partially cut restraint is now unreliable, add an authorized secondary restraint before repositioning or changing tools. Mark/communicate the condition so no one assumes the tie is intact.
