Exact roof system used here: Owens Corning® Duration® Series field shingles, the current Duration Series installation instructions, and—on the factory-starter path—Owens Corning® Starter Strip Plus shingles. This is not a blended asphalt-shingle recipe. Another manufacturer, another Owens Corning shingle family, or a revised wrapper may make a different cut, starter product, orientation, edge detail, joint rule, fastening pattern, weather rule, or warranty condition controlling.
Job: decide whether starter strips should be factory-made or field-fabricated; when the exact Duration instructions authorize field fabrication, remove the exposure section completely and deliver identified, correctly oriented starter pieces to the roof installer.
Time: plan by verified linear footage, factory-versus-field decision, cutting-station capacity, inspection, and handoff—not by an invented pieces-per-hour number.
Difficulty: the cut is simple; keeping the cut inside one roof system is the skilled part.
The current Hyde Store page still exposes only the Black & Silver® series and high-carbon-steel specification, so its missing duty copy is stale, not contrary evidence.
Everything else: current shingle/starter instructions, approved drawings and code, roof measurements, an accepted straightedge and marking method, a stable tailgate/bench cutting support, orientation racks and batch labels, and the roof crew's access, fall-protection, edge, underlayment, fastener, and QC systems. These are job inputs, not Hyde claims.
Diagnose the material and layout before cutting anything
Prove the roof system, not merely the brand
Read the bundle label and controlling instructions. Record manufacturer, exact Duration Series member, lot, instruction revision/retrieval date, and approved starter product. Owens Corning warns not to mix different lots. Duration FLEX®, Duration STORM®, Woodcrest®, Woodmoor®, Oakridge®, and other families remain outside this guide unless their controlling document expressly brings them in.
Confirm geometry and edge schedule. The roofing lead identifies eaves, rakes, transitions, interruptions, footage, and waste. Do not create untraceable surplus.
Confirm the receiving assembly. Duration branches underlayment by slope, requires a dry deck, addresses ice-dam protection, and defers to the underlayment maker and code. The roof lead records deck, slope, barrier, overlap, and drip-edge decisions before release; this guide does not make them.
Inspect the source. Hold anything wet, stuck, torn, creased, delaminated, distorted, incomplete, bond-surface-contaminated, or untraceable. Cutting only hides a defect beneath the first course.
Make the factory-versus-field decision explicitly
There are two legitimate paths inside this exact system, and they are not interchangeable work instructions.
Factory path — Owens Corning Starter Strip Plus. Its instructions say it separates at a factory perforation into two starter pieces, each with a sealant strip. Compatibility is limited as stated there; Woodcrest and Woodmoor are refused. When this is the approved starter, do not cut Duration field shingles to create a second supply. Separate and install the factory product under its own instructions.
Approved field path — a Duration shingle used as starter. Owens Corning calls this the “only approved method”: cut the exposure section off entirely with a straight horizontal cut, then place the result with its SureNail® Strip along the roof's leading edge. That does not authorize another family, partial removal, an upside-down whole shingle, or loss of the SureNail area.
Write the path on the traveler. If submittal, wrapper, warranty, and current Duration instructions disagree, obtain written manufacturer/specifier resolution before cutting.
Stage safe access and a controlled cutting station
Starter fabrication is bench work. Keep it bench work.
Separate cutting from installation. The Hyde line describes tailgate production: back-side, straightedge, bench-like work. Produce and inspect there, then move closed, labeled batches to the roof crew.
Let the site safety plan control access. Starter Strip Plus warns about wet/icy roofs, fall protection, and the area below; OSHA controls fall protection.
Use only an approved stable support. It must support the cut line and both resulting pieces without rocking, springing, or exposing the bench to an uncontrolled blade. Never cut unsupported, airborne, over-body, or at an improvised roof edge.
Control the material flow. Establish four physically distinct locations: uncut accepted shingles, held/rejected shingles, cut pieces awaiting inspection, and released starter batches. Keep factory Starter Strip Plus out of the field-fabrication station so a factory piece cannot be mistaken for a field-cut Duration strip. Keep removed exposure sections out of the released pile.
Protect traceability. Bring one accepted lot at a time and keep its bundle label or photograph with the traveler. Do not combine unverified remnants.
The roof lead decides whether work proceeds. No universal working temperature is invented.
Lay out and make only the authorized field-starter cut
This section applies only after the traveler says Owens Corning Duration — approved field starter. Factory Starter Strip Plus leaves this workflow at its factory perforation; it is not recut under this guide.
The operation below is Tier-1 professional fixed-knife technique tied to the queue's back-side, straightedge, tailgate/bench production cut.
Orient and mark the back. From the actual Duration shingle and current Figure 5, identify top, bottom, weather face, back, exposure section, and SureNail Strip. Lay the weather face down and smooth back up. Mark both ends of the required boundary, connect them with the accepted straightedge, and write WASTE — EXPOSURE on the removed side and KEEP — SURENAIL / LEADING EDGE on the retained side. The transformation is exactly “remove the exposure section entirely” with a straight horizontal cut. No measurement comes from the knife name.
Set the support and guide. Put the shingle flat on the approved cut-resistant bench support with the whole cut line and both sides supported. Seat the straightedge on the retained side of the mark so any slip moves into waste. Clamp or restrain it by the approved station method; never rely on fingertips near the blade. The setup fails if the shingle rocks, bows, the guide shifts, or the knife could strike the bench, a fastener, or a person.
Set body and hands before the edge touches. Stand balanced with the line beside—not in front of—the torso and with a clear finish zone. Take a full, dry handle grip; keep thumb and fingers behind the blade-to-handle transition and never on the cutting edge. Put the free hand behind the straightedge on the retained side, outside the projected travel path. Move or clamp the work instead of reaching across the line. No hand, thigh, foot, cable, or coworker may be beyond the cut.
Locate, then deepen the same track. Place the edge against the straightedge at one end and draw it along the back in a controlled pull that travels laterally past the body, never toward the torso, leg, or support hand. Make a light locating pass first. Repeat in the same direction and groove, adding only enough pressure for the edge to advance. Keep the blade aligned with the guide: do not twist, pry, saw back and forth, bend the edge, or force a dull/binding knife. Reposition feet and support before overreaching. Stop and reset if the guide or material moves, the line wanders, granules bunch beneath the work, the edge binds, or extra force becomes necessary.
Control stacks by cut quality, not a production target. Approve one supported shingle first. A batch may be stacked only when the site's approved method keeps identical shingles aligned and restrained and the operator can control every layer with the same light-pass/deepen sequence. Use the smallest stack that stays flat and produces complete, coincident cuts without added force; there is no authored stack count. If a lower layer shifts, tears, remains partly joined, hides a defect, or cannot be inspected, reduce the stack—ultimately to one. Never pin a stack with a hand across the travel path or tear apart incompletely cut layers.
Clear the blade before separating pieces. Finish the full line, lift the knife clear, and sheath or place it in the station's protected holder before moving material. Keep the two pieces identified. The starter is only the intact retained section carrying the SureNail Strip; the removed exposure section enters the designated waste or controlled reuse stream and receives no roof-system function here.
Inspect the first article, then hold the setup. Compare the complete straight cut and retained orientation to Figure 5 and have the roofing lead approve it. If family, lot, station, straightedge, support, stack condition, knife condition, or method changes, close the batch and approve another first article.
Choosing between the two Hyde knives
The graph names both because both are roofing knives in the exact local line, not because this guide can invent a performance test.
22310: Hyde says it cuts roofing and drywall; its high-carbon cutlery-steel blade is hardened, tempered, and honed, with hardwood handle.
22320: the 2024 catalog supplies “stiff, high-carbon steel blade.” The current official product page now adds exact-model duty to score and cut roofing and drywall or “pry apart asphalt singles” [sic]. Its roofing score/cut duty supports this row; its pry phrase does not.
The approved station chooses between them; neither is represented as faster, safer, deeper, or warranty-preferred.
Label, orient, inspect, and reject at batch grain
Every released batch needs a label or traveler that survives the trip from station to eave.
manufacturer and exact Duration Series member;
source bundle lot number;
“FIELD STARTER — EXPOSURE SECTION REMOVED ENTIRELY”;
“SURENAIL STRIP TO LEADING ROOF EDGE”;
current instruction URL/revision or retrieval date and Figure 5 reference;
cutter and first-article approver;
cut/inspection date;
single-piece or stack method and the approved pieces-per-pass used;
intended roof area or edge schedule;
holds, deviations, and disposition.
Stack or rack pieces so one marked orientation remains visible. Do not alternate them merely to make a neater pile. The installer should be able to lift a piece, see the label, and verify the SureNail-leading-edge instruction without reconstructing how the shingle was cut.
Reject or hold:
a strip from the wrong manufacturer, family, unapproved lot, or unknown bundle;
a partial exposure-section cut;
a non-horizontal, wandering, torn, fractured, or visibly damaged cut;
a stack-produced lower layer with an incomplete, shifted, or hidden cut;
a retained piece missing or damaging the SureNail Strip;
a piece whose leading-edge orientation cannot be proved;
wet, contaminated, stuck, creased, delaminated, distorted, or otherwise defective material;
a field-cut strip placed into a factory Starter Strip Plus batch, or the reverse;
any piece modified again to “make it fit” after rejection;
any batch whose installation figure, code decision, edge schedule, or warranty path is unresolved.
Do not repair a wrong strip with adhesive, extra fasteners, a second strip, or a narrower recut. Those are installation inventions. Quarantine the piece and let the roofing lead or manufacturer decide whether it has any permitted use outside this job.
Installation handoff: preserve the exact system without teaching a hybrid
The cutting crew finishes when accepted strips and a complete traveler reach the roofing lead. Installation begins under the current roof-system instructions.
Factory Starter Strip Plus handoff
Starter Strip Plus instructions control separation, compatibility, starting trim, drip-edge relationship, eave limit, fasteners, and joints. They direct removal of 6 inches from the first starter at the rake, five fasteners 2–3 inches from the eave, and at least 4 inches between an overlying shingle end joint and starter joint.
Duration field-starter handoff
For the field route, the current Duration instructions control:
the only approved transformation: entire exposure section removed by a straight horizontal cut;
the installed orientation: SureNail Strip along the leading roof edge;
five ASTM D1667F-compliant roofing nails, equally spaced across the shingle width;
the current Figure 5 starter layout and the page's edge-overhang/drip-edge provisions;
the applicable cold-weather, perimeter hand-sealing, deck, underlayment, slope, local-code, and first-course requirements.
Do not translate “equally spaced” into an unstated edge distance or borrow factory joint spacing. The roofer verifies Figure 5, wrapper, and project drawing. Any unresolved field-starter joint or edge condition requires a recorded Owens Corning answer.
Adhesive position is an orientation test, not an invitation to add cement
The field path retains the SureNail Strip at the leading edge; each factory piece has its own sealant strip. Neither authorizes the cutter to add cement, move sealant, coat an edge, or treat contamination. Cold-weather hand sealing follows current Duration instructions only.
Drip edge, underlayment, eaves, and rakes
The starter cannot cure an omitted barrier, wrong underlayment branch, wet deck, unresolved drip edge, or bad edge layout. Before release, the roof lead reads back:
exact slope and the selected Duration underlayment branch;
ice-dam-history decision and the exact eave-barrier instruction;
drip-edge type and the controlling edge/overhang detail;
eave and rake starter coverage on the approved drawing;
field or factory starter path;
first-course joint relationship and fastener exposure check;
cold-weather/perimeter-sealing status;
current code and warranty documents.
Warranty boundary
Approved field fabrication does not prove the cut piece counts as an Owens Corning component for every extended warranty, satisfies a specification naming Starter Strip Plus, or carries a condition written for another shingle. Current warranty materials distinguish standard from extended coverage and tie extended options to components and contractor certification.
Record the warranty in effect on installation day, certification, components, and written starter requirement. If it requires a factory starter component, an approved field cut is no substitute unless the warranty says so.
Closeout and readback
Before the batch leaves the station:
reconcile source shingles, released starters, rejects, and removed exposure pieces;
verify every released piece belongs to the labeled lot and exact Duration family;
verify the complete exposure section is absent;
verify the retained SureNail Strip and leading-edge mark;
record first-article approval and all setup changes;
photograph the source bundle label, first accepted piece beside the current Figure 5, representative released stack, and quarantine pile;
transfer the traveler directly to the roofing lead.
Before the first course covers the starter, the installer records a visible readback: factory or field path; eave/rake location; starter orientation; joint disposition; drip-edge and underlayment context; fastener standard, count, and placement under the controlling instruction; weather/cold-hand-seal disposition; rejected pieces removed; and the current instruction/warranty revision used. Photograph a representative uncovered run with its label in frame. After coverage, the strip's decisive facts disappear, so “we checked later” is not proof.
Stop the line if any readback is missing. Do not let schedule convert an unseen orientation, unknown joint, wrong lot, or unverified fastener layout into finished roof.
What goes wrong—and the bounded correction
“We always flip a whole shingle for starter.” Not in this Duration field method. The current instruction requires complete removal of the exposure section and puts the SureNail Strip at the leading edge.
“The tabs are mostly gone.” “Entirely” is the manufacturer's word. A partial exposure section is not an accepted field starter. Reject it; do not trim it in place at the eave.
“The strip looks right, but nobody knows which edge leads.” Appearance is not orientation proof. Hold the batch, return to the source bundle and Figure 5, and re-establish identity. If that cannot be done, reject it.
“We cut the SureNail section off.” The wrong half was retained. It cannot meet the field-starter instruction. Quarantine it.
“Let's use the Starter Strip Plus dimensions on the field-cut pieces.” Those values belong to the factory product instructions. Use Duration Figure 5 and obtain written clarification for any unresolved field condition.
“The roof is wet, but cutting is happening at the tailgate.” Cutting station dryness does not make the receiving deck or access route acceptable. The Duration and site weather boundaries still control installation; hold delivery to the roof.
“A cut wandered, so cement will hide it.” Adhesive is not dimensional repair. Reject it.
“The lot changed, but color is hidden.” Close the batch, identify the new lot, and approve a new first article.
“The installer will sort the rejects at the eave.” Roof-edge sorting is late, exposed, and difficult to audit. Keep rejects on the ground in the quarantine stream.
“Five nails are five nails; placement is obvious.” Placement is a product instruction. Factory Starter Strip Plus and field-cut Duration text do not use identical wording. Read the controlling instruction and Figure 5; never blend them.
“Approved field starter means full warranty.” It proves only that the current Duration installation page approves that fabrication method.
Factory starter or field-cut Duration? Follow the approved submittal and warranty. Starter Strip Plus supplies factory separation and sealant geometry; field fabrication is legitimate only under Duration's one stated method.
Can I cut another shingle the same way? No.
Which Hyde knife? The exact graph is 22310 22320. The approved station chooses; no speed or warranty distinction is invented.
How wide? No width is authored. Remove the exposure section entirely and follow current Figure 5.
Which way do I run the knife? On the supported back, make a light locating pull and deepen the same groove in the same lateral, body-clear direction. Section 3 controls hands, stance, guide, and stop conditions.
Can I cut a stack? Only after a one-piece first article, and only the smallest aligned, restrained stack that remains fully controllable and inspectable. No exact count is authored.
Where does the adhesive go? For the approved Duration field starter, retain and orient the SureNail Strip along the leading roof edge. Starter Strip Plus has a sealant strip on each factory-separated piece. Do not add, relocate, or improvise adhesive.
What overhang, joints, and fasteners? Use the chosen path's current instruction. Factory rules stay factory. Field Duration supplies the straight cut, SureNail orientation, five equally spaced ASTM D1667F nails, and Figure 5/edge provisions.
Can I cut on the roof? No. This row's fabrication method is the supported tailgate/bench operation; roof access and installation remain under the fall-protection plan.
Wrapper differs from web page? Preserve both and record written manufacturer/specifier resolution before work.
The history footnote: from sacrificial headlap to a manufactured component
Starter courses predate factory starter products because the first visible course has no lower course beneath its joints and cutouts. A 1987 “Starter shingle” patent records the transition from field workaround to a purpose-made component with uninterrupted backing, sealant, and factory separation. Patent 4,637,191](
That transition is still visible on today's job. Starter Strip Plus is the factory descendant: preplanned separation, sealant on both resulting pieces, repeatable geometry. The approved Duration field starter preserves the older trade capability but puts it under one exact modern rule: remove the exposure section completely and keep the engineered SureNail surface at the roof's leading edge. The knife did not disappear when the component arrived; its role became conditional.
This row owns only starter selection, approved field fabrication, batch control, and installation handoff.
