Roofing felt and underlayment are parts of a roof system, not interchangeable rolls of black or gray sheet. The current instructions for the exact underlayment, roof covering, deck, slope, leak barrier, flashing, fasteners, weather exposure, warranty, project, and jurisdiction control every dimension and installation rule. This guide owns the cut workflow. It does not turn one manufacturer’s layout into a universal roofing recipe.
Job: identify the exact roll product, convert the approved roof layout into course and detail pieces, cut only with a tool and method authorized for that material, protect the deck and live roof layers, and hand each accepted piece to installation with its identity and orientation intact.
Time: no honest universal estimate. Roof geometry, material type, course schedule, detail count, protected cutting location, weather, inspection, and holds set the duration.
Difficulty: moderate at a protected station and high consequence on a roof. A clean-looking cutoff can still be the wrong material, wrong orientation, wrong lap allowance, or a concealed score through the layer below.

Everything else: current underlayment, roof-covering, and warranty instructions · product labels · accepted deck/slope record · measured plane/detail schedule · directed measuring and marking tools · approved cutting support or shield · access, fall-protection, material-restraint, and temporary-weather plans · specified installation and repair materials.
Prove what the roll is before measuring it
“Felt” is used loosely on jobsites. Freeze the material identity from the wrapper, data sheet, and current installation instructions:
Asphaltic roof-deck protection: GAF Shingle-Mate®, for example, is instructed for use under asphalt shingles on a clean, dry wood deck without wrinkles. It has its own slope and exposure rules.
Mechanically fastened synthetic underlayment: products such as GAF FeltBuster® or Owens Corning® ProArmor® are synthetic sheets with their own deck, slope, lap, fastener, weather, and roof-covering scopes. “Synthetic” does not make the two systems interchangeable.
Self-adhered leak barrier or ice-and-water product: this is a different operation involving release film, adhesion, rolling, primers or substrate conditions, and product-specific details. Unless its exact instructions and approved method establish a Hyde fixed-knife role, cutting actuation is outside this guide.
A roll that looks like underlayment may have a different roof-covering, deck, attachment, fire-classification, or exposure contract.
Record manufacturer, exact product, roll/lot identifiers, dimensions printed on the wrapper, intended roof covering, slope range, approved deck, instruction title and revision or retrieval date, warranty path, and any code or evaluation-report conditions. Photograph the label before the roll is opened.
Release the deck, system, weather, and access gates
The cut schedule begins only after the receiving assembly is accepted.
Use the exact underlayment’s deck criteria. Current GAF FeltBuster instructions require a clean, dry deck, removal of debris and protruding fasteners, and repair or replacement of damaged or rotted sections before installation. Owens Corning ProArmor likewise calls for a properly prepared dry deck that is smooth, clean, structurally sound, and free of depressions, projections, or protruding nails, then names acceptable deck materials and defers to deck-maker requirements and local code.
A wet, soft, rotten, delaminated, buckled, contaminated, uneven, or structurally unresolved deck is a hold, not a surface to cover. Cutting a roll to fit does not release the substrate.
Roof system
Freeze the roof covering, slope, eave and rake construction, valley type, hips and ridges, walls, curbs, vents, chimneys, skylights, drains, transitions, leak-barrier locations, drip-edge relationship, ventilation design, and any enhanced-warranty component set. The stricter compatible project requirement controls; an unresolved conflict stops layout.
Weather and exposure
Inspect rolls before release. GAF Shingle-Mate says not to apply wrinkled or cracked material and not to leave it exposed to moisture or precipitation as an unprotected weathering surface.
The temporary-weather plan, forecast, fastener/lap treatment, roof-covering schedule, code, and warranty must all agree. If rain, frost, wind, or contamination changes footing or the sheet’s condition, secure material under the approved plan and stop.
Roof access
This page authorizes no roof access system. OSHA treats roofing weatherproofing as work where fall protection is critical, and the employer selects the compliant system after evaluating the structure and task. The plan must also control roll movement, stored material, dropped objects, sharp tools, rescue, and the area below. A roll can become a sail; a loose cutoff can leave the roof before the worker can catch it.
Whenever the workflow permits, make repeat cuts at an approved protected station. In-place detail cutting requires a project method naming access, restraint, support, tool, and inspection controls.
Turn the approved layout into a cut schedule
Do not roll material onto the roof and decide course lengths one knife stroke at a time.
Divide the roof into identified planes and details. Give each plane, porch, dormer, valley, hip, ridge, wall, curb, and penetration a stable identifier. Mark transitions where the material or layout changes.
No value from the GAF or Owens Corning examples below transfers to another product.
Measure the receiving run. Measure the actual course or detail between its approved boundaries. Add only the extension, lap, wrap, turn-up, trim, or termination allowance required by the exact drawing. If the drawing does not resolve a detail, flag the measurement rather than inventing an allowance.
Separate gross roll planning from finished-piece marking. Roll coverage estimates purchase quantity; they do not locate a field cut. Finished-piece marks come from the verified roof geometry plus the selected product’s required relationships.
Build a piece schedule. For every planned piece, record product and lot, roof/plane/detail, course or sequence number, measured run, each system-required allowance, intended orientation, printed-face direction if controlled, keep end, waste end, adjoining piece, and instruction figure or section.
Stage a first article. Release one marked piece, compare it to the roof card and current instructions, and have the responsible installer accept its identity, orientation, and allowances before repeating that condition.
Mark a field piece completely before cutting. At a penetration, do not copy an old opening or use a rough center measurement. Establish it from the exact detail and approved template, drawing, or transferred location. If the sheet must remain continuous until positioned, this is an installation-stage cut.
Prepare a stable cutting station and admit the exact knife
Prefer a stable, supported station with the complete line on firm sacrificial support. For an on-roof cut, use only a released roof field with access/fall controls in service, secure sheet and cutoff against wind, and place a visible approved shield beneath the line. Sheet, waste, straightedge, and shield must not rock, creep, or bridge a void. Never cut against a live roof layer, body, or hidden surface.
22310: Hyde’s current page authorizes cutting roofing and drywall and documents a hardened, tempered, honed high-carbon cutlery-steel blade with a hardwood handle.
22320: Hyde’s current page says its stiff high-carbon-steel blade scores and cuts roofing and drywall.
Material: GAF FeltBuster expressly allows a straight blade, scissors, or sharp hook blade. Every other felt, synthetic, or self-adhered product must admit its cutter under current instructions.
Use a sound, clean, keen knife. Remove loose, cracked, chipped, rolled, corroded, moving, or grip-fouling equipment from service.
Make the controlled single-layer cut
Orient one layer. Match label to schedule; place the controlled face, selvage, printed lines, adhesive/release side, and leading direction as the system card requires. Never cut a wrinkle, buckle, fold, or curled bridge. Secure, flatten, or disposition it by product instructions, then re-mark. No stack is authorized.
Mark the line. Transfer both endpoints and the system-derived line; mark location, keep/waste sides, and orientation. Reconcile every allowance first. This guide supplies no dimension, lap, overhang, wrap, or opening value.
Set guide and support. Place a sound straightedge on the retained side unless exact instructions differ. Prevent pivoting. Keep the non-cutting hand behind the start and on the retained side; fingers never cross the path, hide below, or hold waste.
Set stance and grip. Use balanced contact, with torso clear and no lean, twist, or reach. Take a full dry dominant-hand grip, keep the wrist near neutral, and align the edge. Move the sheet or body when the line leaves comfortable reach.
Create away-travel. Make the stroke enter clear supported space away from body, non-cutting hand, others, roof edge, and live layers. Never drive the point toward the body, across the support hand, or into an occupied finish zone.
Locate, then deepen. Use a low working angle and only the shallow point/edge needed for one sheet. Make a light scoring or slicing pass, then deepen the same kerf progressively until separation. Material response sets force and pass count; never plunge, saw rapidly, torque, or lift sheet into blade.
Reposition, never reach. Secure the knife before moving sheet, guide, shield, knees, or feet. Re-support the next segment and restore hand exclusion. Stop if safe travel and visible layer protection cannot coexist.
Approve the first article. Inspect both faces, full edge, endpoints, keep dimensions, markings, orientation, and support. Confirm no score or puncture reached a surviving layer. The responsible installer accepts it against the current system card before repetition.
Inspect and label each piece. Hold any piece with tearing, stretch, fray, delamination, contamination, misorientation, short length, overcut, incomplete separation, or line departure. Label accepted work with product/lot, location, sequence, orientation, measurement source, cutter, inspector, and instruction revision.
If a cut wanders, tears, or overruns, stop; never “clean it up” into retained material. Quarantine it for the exact repair/replacement disposition. Reassign a sound remnant only through the schedule when it fully satisfies another piece. Never shrink a lap, stretch sheet, shift alignment, omit a turn-up, hide an overcut, or trim unsupported against a live layer.
Detail branches: courses, laps, penetrations, valleys, eaves, and rakes
Field courses and roll ends
The exact product decides whether courses run parallel to eaves, whether a slope requires single or double coverage, where printed guide lines land, how end laps are offset, and what fastening or taping changes with weather exposure. Mark each cutoff so the next course or roll continuation receives the specified relationship.
Treat every lap allowance as retained functional material, not trimming waste. Mark the visible finished boundary and the hidden lap boundary separately. If a piece is cut through the lap zone, too short to reach it, or reversed so its intended overlap cannot shed water in the approved assembly, quarantine it. Adhesive, tape, or extra fasteners do not restore a missing lap unless the exact manufacturer repair says they do.
Penetrations, walls, curbs, and skylights
The flashing system owns the opening. Some details place roof-deck protection under a leak barrier; others change the sequence at the downslope and upslope sides. Freeze the detail drawing and identify which layer remains continuous, which is cut, and which laps over or under each flashing component. Pre-cut only when the drawing and transferred dimensions resolve the opening. Otherwise position, mark, protect the underlying layer, and use the authorized installation-stage method. No generic slit, radial cut, corner cut, wrap height, or sealant procedure is supplied here.
Valleys, hips, and ridges
Do not trim a valley as though it were an ordinary field-course end. The selected system may require leak barrier first, full-width material, bilateral extension, a specific overlap, or a different underlayment sequence. Hips and ridges likewise may require material carried across, overlapped from both sides, or terminated for ventilation. Preserve the system-directed allowance and label the piece by detail. If the valley, hip, or ridge drawing is unresolved, hold the cut.
Eaves and rakes
Drip-edge and leak-barrier order can differ between eaves and rakes and among systems. Mark eave and rake pieces separately, identify the leading edge, and hand them off with the selected figure. Never use a knife cutoff to decide an overhang, exposure, barrier reach, or drip-edge sequence.
Stop branches and bounded recovery
The sheet tears, frays, delaminates, or the cut wanders. Stop the piece. Quarantine damage to retained material. Use only the exact manufacturer’s repair or replacement disposition; a cleaner recut is not automatically acceptable.
A wrinkle or buckle appears. Do not stretch the sheet flat, slice the wrinkle, or bury it. Determine whether it came from storage, roll memory, deck condition, layout, weather, or fastening. Follow the material maker’s wrinkle bulletin or obtain written direction.
The cut passes the mark or enters a lap/detail allowance. Hold the piece. Do not relabel a shorter piece for the same location or reduce the assembly relationship. Reassign it only through the documented cut schedule if another approved piece can be made without concealing the defect.
The knife, support, or shield may have contacted a live layer. Stop installation and expose the corresponding location. Inspect deck, installed underlayment, leak barrier, flashing, wiring, and roof covering as applicable.
Material is wet, frosted, contaminated, stuck, or wind-damaged. Secure the work and stop. Do not cut away the visible symptom and install the rest. Resolve storage, product condition, deck acceptance, weather, and warranty disposition.
The printed line conflicts with the measured/system line. Stop. Confirm product, orientation, slope branch, and instruction revision. A factory grid assists one product’s layout; it cannot overrule the approved drawing.
A fastener blocks a planned cut or the proposed cut would enter a fastened area. Do not cut around, through, or lever against it.
The opening does not match the penetration or flashing. Do not enlarge it by eye on the roof. Re-establish the detail from the approved drawing/template and decide whether the piece remains usable.
Weather exposure will exceed the plan. Stop producing pieces, secure the roof, and execute the temporary-weather route.
Installation handoff and inspection
The cutting operation ends with identified accepted pieces, not anonymous rolls and offcuts.
For each delivery, provide the current product instructions, system card, piece schedule, labels, first-article approval, rejects/holds, weather status, and exact warranty path. The installer reads back:
correct product and lot at the correct roof/plane/detail;
deck acceptance still current;
correct orientation and course sequence;
system-directed side/head and end-lap relationships;
valley, hip, ridge, wall, curb, penetration, eave, rake, leak-barrier, and drip-edge relationships;
exact fastener type, spacing, placement, drive condition, and exposure branch from the controlling source;
wrinkles, tears, scuffs, holes, overcuts, wetness, and contamination absent or dispositioned by the written repair;
temporary exposure, wind, rain/snow, and cover timing within the approved plan;
roof-covering and warranty component requirements still satisfied.
Inspect the first installed piece before repetition and every changed detail before concealment. Photograph labels, representative cut edges, laps, protected-layer condition, fasteners, and detail transitions while visible. A neat field does not prove correct laps or an intact layer below it.
Warranty follows the exact documents in force for the purchased tool and roof system. Hyde’s 22320 product page prints “Guaranteed forever,” while Hyde’s current warranty page limits warranty coverage to purchases through Hyde or authorized retailers and states its current defect/damage process. Quote neither phrase as broader coverage than the current terms. Underlayment warranties likewise have product, installation, component, notice, and remedy conditions. This local guide proves none of them.
Are roofing felt and synthetic underlayment cut the same way?
Not by default. Their instructions can differ on cutter class, layout, laps, fastening, exposure, repair, roof coverings, and slope. GAF FeltBuster expressly names straight-blade, scissors, and hook-blade options.
Which Hyde knife should I use?
Material instructions and the approved workplace method decide admission before either product distinction.
Does the 22310’s “2-inch” name tell me how much blade to expose or how large an opening to cut?
How long should each course be?
The actual run plus only the exact product/system allowances at its end conditions. Measure by plane and course, label every allowance, and stop where a detail is unresolved. There is no universal waste or overhang allowance.
Can I cut several layers at once?
A stack requires exact material, tool, support, inspection, and employer authorization. Otherwise cut and inspect one controlled layer.
What lap, fastening, eave, rake, valley, or penetration rule should I use?
The exact underlayment, roof covering, leak barrier, flashing, code, and warranty documents decide. The GAF and Owens Corning sources below demonstrate why values cannot be blended.
Can underlayment serve as a temporary roof?
Shingle-Mate expressly refuses unprotected moisture/precipitation exposure; FeltBuster warns that even its special rain/snow installation may not be completely waterproof; ProArmor has its own coverage period and fastener branch.
What if the roll is already wet or wrinkled?
Hold it. Preserve the label and condition, then obtain the manufacturer/project disposition. Cutting away the worst area does not prove the remainder installable.
A short history: the roof began as a roll before it became a shingle
The National Bureau of Standards’ 1941 report on asphalt-prepared roofing records prepared roll roofing on the market by 1893, mineral-surfaced roll roofing by 1897, and mineral-surfaced asphalt shingles by 1901. That chronology explains why the felt-and-underlayment cut is not secondary trivia: continuous prepared sheet came first, and the later shingle roof retained a sheet layer beneath its individual pieces. Modern synthetic and self-adhered products changed the material and system contract, not the need to identify, measure, cut, overlap, and protect the continuous layer.
The frozen 22320 packet lacks the current page’s roofing duty; the live exact-model page supplies it. No unsupported product specification or universal roof-system procedure is imported.
