Hyde does not establish compatibility with every fabric called canvas, duck, upholstery cloth, webbing, coated textile, laminate, technical cloth, or composite; a permitted ply count; a maximum material weight; direction, grain, bias, nap, print-match, or pattern rules; cut allowance; required edge finish; edge life; finished-part approval; or performance after cutting.

Job: Make a straight, controlled bench cut at an authorized line through identified fabric or canvas without lifting, dragging, stretching, or unnecessarily fraying the retained piece.

Typical active cutting time: A few minutes per line after layout.

Difficulty: Moderate. The stroke is simple; preserving alignment while a flexible woven material tries to shift is the craft.

Length is the only recorded difference between these two models.

Everything else the station needs: the authorized pattern or dimensions; identified and conditioned material; a clean, stable bench; a sacrificial cutting surface; a rigid straightedge or approved template; suitable weights, clamps, or vacuum hold-down outside the blade path; an approved marking method; task-selected PPE; a safe edge cover or storage location; waste container; and any maker-specified downstream binding, sewing, coating, sealing, or inspection process. None of that supporting equipment is supplied or approved by the registered knives.

Define the result before touching the roll

This job is a straightedge draw cut, not a universal fabric-fabrication method. The retained piece is successful only when:

the correct material, face, lot, and orientation were used;

the cut follows the authorized line and keeps the required allowance;

the work stayed supported and did not stretch, skew, or bunch during the stroke;

the retained edge has no avoidable steps, uncut bridges, pulled yarns, contamination, or knife damage;

any required matching, end treatment, joining, or release inspection remains possible;

the knife is cleaned and stored without exposing the next person to its edge.

A straight-looking edge does not prove that the material was oriented correctly, that the cut lies on grain, that a coating remains serviceable, that multiple plies stayed registered, that a seam allowance is correct, or that the part is fit for an awning, sail, cover, seat, bag, garment, restraint, filter, enclosure, or other finished use. Those are article and material decisions.

Stop or change process before the cut when

the material cannot be positively identified;

the pattern, retained side, allowance, orientation, or match point is unresolved;

the exact material maker prohibits knife cutting or requires a powered, heated, ultrasonic, die, laser, shear, or other controlled process;

a coating, embedded reinforcement, wire, hardware, adhesive, or laminate is present but its cold-cut behavior is unknown;

the sample cut stretches, delaminates, drags, scorches, chips the blade, sheds hazardous dust, or requires unsafe force;

the stack is too thick or mobile to remain registered under the approved hold-down;

the station cannot give the blade a clear path away from the body and hands;

the employer's hazard assessment requires a guarded or powered system that neither registered fixed-blade knife supplies;

the piece belongs to a certified, load-rated, life-safety, medical, aviation, vehicle-restraint, lifting, fall-protection, or similarly controlled assembly.

For rated or safety-critical textile assemblies, isolate the material and route it to the original manufacturer or authorized process. A clean hand cut cannot preserve a certification, strength rating, fire classification, weathering claim, or approved termination by appearance alone.

Qualify the material and the station

Identify what “canvas” means on this job

Canvas is a shop description, not a complete cutting specification. Determine whether the stock is woven, knit, nonwoven, coated, laminated, backed, reinforced, stretch-bearing, prefinished, printed, napped, or otherwise directional. Determine whether its maker requires acclimation, face-up or face-down cutting, a particular edge treatment, contamination control, or special ventilation.

Do not assign universal rules to “warp,” “weft,” “grain,” “bias,” nap, selvage, or coating direction from this guide. A pattern or material specification may control all of them, but Hyde's records for 60110 and 60115 do not.

If the shop intends to stack plies, the approved process must state the count and how registration is controlled. Neither Hyde source supplies a ply capacity. A sample that cuts one layer cleanly does not authorize two, and a stack that looks flat at rest can creep internally during a draw.

Prepare a surface that supports the fibers

Use a stable bench large enough to support the retained piece and waste without either hanging and pulling on the line. Cover the cut zone with a clean sacrificial board or mat appropriate to the material and knife. It must be firm enough to support the yarns at breakthrough, soft enough not to damage the edge immediately, and free of deep grooves that steer the blade.

Remove staples, pins, wire, grit, hardened adhesive, dried coating, metal straightedge burrs, and previous cut debris. A single hidden hard inclusion can nick the edge, deflect the stroke, or become a projectile. Keep food, drinks, oils, sharpening swarf, and dirty shop rags away from finish-sensitive cloth.

Support the roll on its own stand or table if needed. Do not make the retained piece carry the roll's weight. Let material relax in the condition specified by its maker; do not pull it flat so hard that the measurement changes when the weights come off.

Choose and restrain the guide

Use a rigid straightedge long enough to span the authorized cut or an approved hard template. Put it on the retained side when the pattern allows, so a small wander enters waste rather than the part. Clamp or weight it where practical. The non-knife hand stays behind the guide's protected side, never wrapped over the cutting edge.

The guide must resist the direction of the draw without bowing, rocking, or walking. A ruler that moves is worse than no ruler because the operator follows its error confidently. Do not use a hand as a fence. Do not ask a helper to hold cloth taut across the blade path.

Apply only layout tension

Smooth the material from the reference area outward until it lies naturally flat. Use distributed weights or an approved hold-down on both sides of the line, outside the stroke and exit path. The aim is to remove ripples and prevent bunching—not to stretch the stock.

This boundary matters:

Too little restraint: the edge pushes a ridge ahead of itself, the weave rotates, and the line bows.

Too much tension: the material measures long or narrow under load and changes shape after release.

Uneven tension: one side feeds faster, so a straight guide produces a distorted part.

The exact acceptable tension is a material/process fact absent from Hyde's knife records.

Select and inspect the exact registered knife

60110 — the general bench choice

Choose 60110 when the cut can be made comfortably with its stroke and the operator benefits from keeping more of the edge close to the hand. It is the default of the pair for a mixed bench. That is a length-and-control selection, not a claim that it is approved for every textile.

60115 — the long-line production choice

The source set establishes no difference from 60110 except those two additional inches of blade.

Choose 60115 when representative trials show that the longer edge reduces stroke starts on wide goods or repetitive straight production lines without sacrificing control. Fewer restarts can reduce junction marks, but the longer reach also makes support and deliberate follow-through more important. Do not invent a strength, sharpness, fabric class, finish-quality, or capacity difference between the models.

Pre-use inspection

Before either knife is admitted to the bench:

inspect the hardwood handle for cracks, looseness, contamination, or damage;

inspect the ferrule and blade connection;

reject a bent, cracked, chipped, corroded, loose, or otherwise damaged knife;

verify useful sharpness on representative scrap, not a finger;

clean residue from the blade on a hard, stable surface with the edge controlled;

confirm the full planned stroke ends in the sacrificial surface, away from every hand and body part;

establish where the knife will be placed or covered immediately after the cut.

Both are maintained, exposed fixed blades. Neither retracts, guards itself, measures sharpness, controls a straightedge, or certifies an edge as safe. A cut-resistant glove may reduce injury severity when selected for the task; it does not turn the holding hand into a clamp.

Lay out the cut without creating a hidden error

Confirm the job packet. Match material ID, face, lot where required, pattern revision, quantity, finished dimensions, allowance, orientation, and downstream operation.

Establish the datum. Use the authorized selvage, pattern notch, printed feature, centerline, or surveyed reference. Do not assume a roll end is square.

Let the material lie in its specified condition. Remove packaging distortion by the maker's method. Do not tug a wrinkle out and measure while it is stretched.

Align directional features. Follow the pattern for weave direction, nap, print repeat, coating face, matched panels, or bias.

Mark the retained and waste sides. A single pencil line is ambiguous after the straightedge covers it. Add clear retained-side and orientation marks away from the finished edge.

Include authorized allowances. Seam, hem, fold, binding, turnback, joining, and trim allowances come from the pattern—not from knife width or habit.

For symmetric or paired pieces, confirm handedness before cutting.

Set the sacrificial surface beneath the entire line. Never bridge the cut over a bench gap or let the blade exit onto a finished tabletop, floor, another textile layer, or the roll beneath.

Place the straightedge and restraint. Keep weights and clamps clear of the handle, blade, and exit path. Make sure the waste cannot fall and pull the last fibers sideways.

Before production, make a qualification cut on representative scrap from the same material condition. The sample should include the actual orientation, coating or backing, intended ply stack, straightedge, support, hold-down, and chosen knife. Inspect it under the same acceptance criteria as a part.

Make the straightedge draw cut

The doer sequence

Clear the zone. Remove bystanders from the draw and breakthrough areas. Tie back loose clothing, secure cords, and give the operator stable footing.

Recheck retention. Press or weight the cloth only in the approved zones. The fabric should be flat and stable without visible stretch or skew.

Grip the knife deliberately. Use a secure, dry grip. Keep the wrist aligned with the forearm and the elbow positioned so the stroke can travel without crossing the torso.

Present the blade low. Set the straight cutting edge against the guide at a shallow slicing attitude. A steep presentation tends to push or bunch flexible cloth ahead of the edge.

Begin at an accessible edge. These are square-point knives, not piercing tools. Do not stab the square end into the field of a panel. An internal opening needs its own approved start method and is outside this straight-from-an-edge job.

Draw away from the body. Move a useful length of edge through the material while the straightedge carries the line. Let travel sever the fibers; do not chop downward or lever the blade sideways.

Keep the guide—not the wrist—in charge. Maintain light, consistent contact against the straightedge. Do not steer harder when the cloth shifts; stop with the knife controlled and correct the support.

Use the stroke length. With 60110, make a controlled pass whose end stays within easy command. With 60115, draw through the useful edge and finish deliberately rather than flicking the far end.

Reduce force at breakthrough. As the last fibers part, keep waste supported and let the blade enter the sacrificial surface. A hard final pull can drag yarns or send the waste and knife beyond the station.

Repeat only in the same path when qualified. If one pass does not sever the exact material safely, return to the same groove for another full draw. Do not scrub back and forth, saw short sections, or add body weight. If the edge pushes a ridge, fibers roll instead of parting, or the required force rises, stop and diagnose.

Control stroke junctions. When the line exceeds one stroke, overlap into the established groove rather than starting beside it. Keep the blade low during the overlap so the edge does not leave a notch or step.

Set the knife down safely. Place or cover it in the designated location before lifting the straightedge, moving weights, separating plies, or touching the cut edge.

Multi-ply work

Only cut a stack if the approved qualification covers that exact material, ply count, layup direction, hold-down, knife, and inspection. Keep registration marks visible. Restrain the stack broadly enough that interior plies cannot feed toward the blade. After cutting, inspect every ply—not just the top and bottom—for creep, short edges, dragged yarns, or coating transfer.

Coated, laminated, or reinforced material

Stop if the cold draw causes whitening, cracking, delamination, coating pickup, embedded-fiber pullout, hazardous dust, or an unexpectedly hard inclusion. Do not heat either Hyde knife or improvise an open-flame seal. If the material maker specifies a hotknife, ultrasonic cutter, powered shear, or other process, that equipment and its safety instructions replace this cutting method; it does not become a context product in this guide.

Inspect, finish, clean, and store

Release weights gradually and let the retained piece relax before judging dimensions.

correct part, face, orientation, handedness, and quantity;

line position and allowance;

straightness against the authorized tolerance;

stroke-junction steps or notches;

pulled, rolled, bridged, or uncut yarns;

fray beyond the approved acceptance limit;

weave distortion or evidence that the material was stretched;

coating cracks, delamination, contamination, or transfer;

ply-to-ply registration where a stack was authorized.

Do not trim an isolated defect freehand unless the work order permits it. A tiny cosmetic correction can steal a seam allowance or create a stress riser. Quarantine a nonconforming part and route it through the shop's disposition process.

The knife cut is not automatically the finished edge. Binding, hemming, folding, stitching, coating, heat sealing, or leaving an edge raw are material/article decisions.

Brush or vacuum loose fibers by the material maker's approved cleanup method; do not blow debris across the shop or into another worker's breathing zone. Wipe the blade on a hard, stable surface with the edge pointing away and the hand out of its path. Remove adhesive or coating residue with a cleaner approved for both the material and tool environment; this guide names no universal solvent.

Dry the high-carbon steel blade after cleanup. Remove the knife from service if the edge is chipped, rolled, cracked, bent, or requires unsafe force.

Store each knife so nobody can reach blindly into the exposed edge.

What goes wrong — and the corrective move

The cloth bunches ahead of the knife. The blade is too steep or dull, the support is dirty or soft, or restraint is insufficient. Stop, reset flat support and distributed hold-down, inspect the edge, and repeat the scrap qualification.

Threads pull instead of parting. The edge is not keen enough for the exact material, the cloth is moving, or the material needs another process. More pressure is not the fix.

The line bows away from the straightedge. The guide moved, the fabric stretched unevenly, or the operator steered from the wrist. Quarantine the piece; clamp or weight the guide and normalize layout tension before trying again.

The cut has a step at every restart. Stroke junctions began beside the established groove. Overlap into the same path, or qualify 60115 when fewer starts are the legitimate reason for the longer knife.

The last inch tears. Waste was unsupported or the operator accelerated at breakthrough. Support both sides and reduce force as the final yarns part.

The top ply is right but an inner ply is short. The stack crept. Stop multi-ply cutting; reduce to a qualified count or use the shop's controlled production process.

The coating whitens, cracks, peels, or sticks to the blade. Cold knife cutting may be incompatible with the exact construction. Stop and obtain material-maker direction; do not promise that cleaning or reheating restores performance.

The cut springs out of dimension after weights come off. Layout tension changed the material. Re-establish the maker-defined measurement condition and scrap or disposition the distorted part.

The blade stalls and flexes. Do not twist, pry, or push through. Withdraw along the kerf, inspect for hidden reinforcement or damage, and requalify the material/process.

The operator wants to start an opening in the middle. That is not this job. The square end is not a plunge point; use the separately authorized internal-opening process.

Hold the part until the pattern owner resolves it.

The shop needs a guarded knife. Neither registered fixed blade supplies that control.

Safety, history, sources, flags, and graph contract

Safety boundary

These are exposed fixed-blade hand tools. For occupational work, the employer owns the hazard assessment, training, workstation controls, and PPE selection. OSHA's current 29 CFR 1910.242(a) makes the employer responsible for the safe condition of tools used by employees. OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.138 requires hand protection when hands face severe-cut or puncture hazards and requires selection according to the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards.

At this station: keep the free hand behind the guide; cut away from the body; never catch a falling knife; never use a glove as a clamp; isolate damaged tools; control the edge before moving weights or material; and store the knife so the edge cannot be contacted inadvertently. Eye protection may be required where brittle coatings, embedded wire, hard inclusions, broken blade material, or hold-down failure can eject debris.

History footnote

Its persistent bench logic is visible here without assigning an inventor: a long straight edge makes the draw, while the blunt square end declines to be a piercing point.
