There are two honest hand-cut finishes:
nipped: quick, stair-stepped, meant to hide;
abraded: slow, continuous, selected when the curve itself must be fair or an enclosed opening cannot be reached from an edge.
Choose by the finished edge, not by which tool is already in the bag.
Confirm that the material belongs to hand cutting
This guide is for ordinary glazed ceramic tile that proves itself on a representative spare.
Stop and use manufacturer-approved machine/fabrication methods for:
glass or glass mosaic;
thick quarry/paver bodies outside the verified tool system;
large-format tile that cannot be supported safely;
fragile relief or crackle finishes;
openings whose edge or structural requirement exceeds a hand-cut result.
Hyde verifies the 19400 for ceramic tile up to 1/2 inch thick. That claim does not establish the 19420’s material or thickness capacity.
The 19420’s store title identifies a 10-inch carbide-grit rod saw blade.
Classify the cut by access and finish
Use this decision:

The 19400 cannot begin in the middle of an intact tile. A nipper needs an accessible edge.
Resolve the finished cover before drawing
Identify what conceals or finishes the cut:
switch/cover plate;
sealant/movement joint;
nothing—the edge remains visible.
Measure actual cover overlap and required service clearance. Preserve access to fasteners, drains, valves, boxes, and penetrations.
Do not make a hole small enough to touch a pipe, fitting, or box merely because the cover is generous. Building movement and system details may require clearance or flexible treatment.
Where no cover exists, the tool must produce an acceptable exposed edge. A nipper is usually the wrong finish.
Integrate the shape with the tile grid
Dry-lay the course and mark joint centers. Ask whether shifting the layout can:
split a hole across two tiles;
move a narrow bridge away from the edge;
put a rough curve under cover;
avoid a sliver;
preserve a focal centerline;
respect a movement joint.
Two open half-moons are often easier and safer than one closed circle. They are not automatically better if the new grout joint lands in the wrong place or under a critical fixture.
Freeze the layout before templating.
Build and prove a full-size template
Template the actual penetration or curve in the tile’s plane.
center and orientation;
approach path for the saw;
Place the template over the obstruction and then over the tile. Rotate patterned tile into its final orientation before transfer.
For repeated openings, verify every field location. Pipes, boxes, and framing rarely repeat perfectly.
Protect the inside corners
Ceramic does not like a sharp re-entrant corner. Stress concentrates there during cutting, handling, setting, and movement.
Use a radius or drilled relief where the tile/system method requires it. A starter hole can serve both as access and as a rounded stop, but its diameter, bit, speed, cooling, and support come from the exact tile/bit method—not this guide.
Do not drill with the 19400 or 19420. They begin after access exists.
If the design demands a square, visible inside corner, use a fabrication method that can produce it without uncontrolled fracture.
Establish the safety and dust route
Glaze fragments and grit are flying-particle hazards. Select hand protection for the cut and puncture exposure without losing control of the tile or cutter.
Drilling and dry abrasion of silica-bearing ceramic/mortar can produce respirable crystalline silica. Evaluate occupational work under OSHA’s construction silica standard. Use the exact tool/material’s approved wet or capture method and the applicable exposure-control route.
Do not add water to an electrical drill, unknown saw-frame assembly, or tile surface unless the selected equipment manuals authorize the complete wet method. Do not dry sweep residue.
Support the tile so it cannot spin, drop, or pinch the cutting path. Keep hands out of the projected fracture.
Prove the physical 19420 system before use
Because the 19420 is a blade rather than a documented complete saw, verify:
frame model and accepted blade fit;
rod straightness and grit condition;
wet/dry method;
directionality, if any;
guard/handle condition;
Do not cut with a rod clamped into an improvised frame. Do not force a 10-inch blade into a frame whose accepted range or end fittings differ.
Run the assembled system on representative waste. Observe kerf, chipping, effort, dust/slurry, and turning behavior before the focal tile.
Nip a hidden edge curve with the 19400
Transfer the curve and mark waste.
Support the tile glaze-up.
Begin at an open edge.
Take a small bite well inside waste using only part of the 5/8-inch jaw width.
Continue in a stair-step pattern.
Rotate the tile/support rather than twisting the nipper.
Leave a narrow margin to the line.
Finish with the smallest controlled bites.
Ease proud points through the tile-approved method.
Approach a convex keep-side curve gradually. For a concave opening, bites try to run into the tile body; reduce bite size further.
Do not close the nipper over the line in one full-jaw bite. The fracture can travel beyond the jaws.
Begin an edge curve with the 19420 class
On the verified frame:
Start from the open tile edge in waste.
Establish a short straight kerf before turning.
Use steady strokes and light pressure.
Clear/capture debris so the line stays visible.
Turn gradually; do not kink the rod at a tight radius.
Support both sides of the developing cut.
Stop for heat, chatter, loosening, glazing, or increased force.
No inches-per-minute claim is made.
Saw outside the finish line and refine by controlled abrasion where the method permits. The best visible edge is the one that never requires a last desperate force stroke.
Create a threaded interior opening
An enclosed opening needs an access hole large enough for the verified blade/end fitting to pass.
Use the tile/bit manufacturer’s drilling method:
support the tile fully;
locate away from a fragile edge;
prevent bit skating;
control heat and dust/slurry;
avoid impact mode unless expressly approved;
let the bit cut;
inspect for radial cracks.
Isolate the drill and clean the opening.
Disassemble the verified saw frame through its instructions.
Pass the 19420 through the starter hole without scraping off grit or damaging the tile.
Reconnect and tension exactly.
Saw toward the waste side of the marked curve.
Keep the tile supported as the waste becomes free.
Stop before the final bridge breaks uncontrolled.
Support and release the waste deliberately.
No physical end-fitting description is accepted for the 19420. If the blade cannot be threaded through the verified starter opening according to its system, use another method.
Combine abrasion and nipping only when the waste is open
Once a cut connects an interior opening to an edge of waste, the 19400 may remove accessible waste where:
the tile is within its ceramic claim;
jaws can enter without prying;
the final edge will hide;
bite force will not crack a narrow bridge.
Do not reach through a small interior opening and twist the nipper against the tile face. The offset jaws are not an inside-hole lever.
Use the rod-saw path for visible or fragile sections, and the nipper only where fast broken-edge removal is genuinely concealed.
Maintain a support map
As the opening grows, the tile becomes a frame. Support under intact areas without blocking the cut.
Particular failure zones:
narrow bridge from opening to tile edge;
small corner between hole and two outside edges;
long thin strip between paired openings;
drilled starter hole close to the finish line;
final uncut ligament holding heavy waste.
Move supports before each zone. Never press the tile over debris; one grit particle beneath glaze can start a new crack.
Read the edge before test-fitting
Inspect under raking light:
radial cracks at starter holes;
deep jaw fractures;
Use only the approved edge-finishing method. Do not polish away cover or enlarge a functional clearance by eye.
Reject a tile with a crack entering the keep-side. Mortar does not heal it.
Test-fit in the installation motion
An opening can measure correctly and still fail to install because the tile cannot pass over a pipe elbow, escutcheon hub, valve, or fixed bracket.
rotation/tilt needed to enter;
movement/sealant space.
Do not force a ceramic frame around an obstruction. Split the tile or revise the sequence if installation motion cannot occur safely.
Handle paired and repeated openings as a pattern
Two nearby penetrations are not two independent holes. The strip between them becomes the most fragile part of the tile.
For paired openings:
template both from one datum;
check cover footprints for collision;
preserve enough material between openings for handling and setting;
drill/saw the more constrained opening first;
support the bridge during the second cut;
test the complete installation motion;
reject any crack that joins the openings.
For repeated tiles, keep one approved full-size template, but remeasure every obstruction. Do not stack tiles and saw them as a pack; hidden chips, changing support, and unequal grit contact make the result unknowable.
If the bridge is too narrow for safe hand work, split the field at a deliberate grout joint or commission the opening. A grout line planned through two penetrations is better than an invisible crack connecting them after cure.
Set without loading the cutout
Follow the mortar/adhesive system for substrate, trowel, coverage, working time, and cure.
Support the tile body during handling. Do not lift it by a narrow bridge.
Comb/key mortar as specified, then place without dragging the opening against the obstruction. Seat the full tile evenly; do not press directly on the thinnest section.
Clean mortar from penetrations, movement gaps, and the future grout joint. Install trim, escutcheon, or sealant through the assembly sequence.
Record the method without inventing a 19420 spec
Record tile, template, cover, cut geometry, starter method, physical frame/blade fit, wet/dust controls, test piece, tool behavior, and finish.
Keep local evidence local.

material/thickness capacity;
None is accepted for 19420.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
The nipper cracks past the line. Reduce bite size, work from open waste, or change to abrasion/machine cutting.
The rod will not turn the radius. Do not kink or force it; enlarge/redesign the radius or use the correct machine.
The interior waste breaks before the loop closes. Support the waste and leave a controlled final ligament.
A radial crack leaves the starter hole. Reject the tile and correct bit, support, heat, pressure, or geometry.
The physical 19420 does not fit the frame. Stop; fitment is unverified and cannot be improvised.
A visible curve has stair-step jaw marks. Recut with a finish-capable method or use intentional trim.
Water reaches an unapproved electrical setup. Stop and restore the verified method.
A porcelain piece consumes hours and keeps chipping. End the hand-tool experiment and rent/source the wet-saw or fabrication route.
The opening clears the pipe but the tile cannot be installed. Redesign for the actual approach motion, often by splitting across a joint.
Mortar squeezes into a movement gap. Clean while workable and restore the assembly detail.
The history footnote
A grit-coated rod brings abrasive machining into a hand frame: unlike a toothed blade, a round abrasive surface can cut while the operator gradually changes direction. The 19400 represents the older anonymous tile-nipping pattern. No exact-product lineage is invented.
