Define the part before cutting
finished part and assembly;
required dimensions/template;
edge type: square, bevel, scarf, decorative;
orientation of any texture/compression/grain-like marks;
top and bottom face;
moisture stage for cutting and joining.
Do not cut directly to a fired dimension without the clay/project shrinkage method.
Do not assume all edges should be vertical; a mitered box, overlapping seam, tile, handle strip, and slab plate ask different geometry.

Identify clay and surface systems
Record clay body/batch and any:

Choose the cutting state
Very soft slabs:
stick to support/guide;
lose corners when lifted.
cut more crisply;
may chip if too dry;
accept less correction after an error.
Select the state from the design/joining sequence.
Test a matching border/offcut:
tool should cut without powder;
edge should not smear badly;
support should release;
slab should not lift with the knife;
piece should handle without distortion.
If not, equalize/rest through the studio’s damp-box/covering method.
Keep dry clay dust controlled
Clay bodies commonly contain crystalline silica.
This guide is a moist/leather-hard knife workflow, not a dry cutting/sanding procedure.
Read the body/SDS and exposure plan.
Use the studio’s wet or HEPA cleanup method. Do not dry sweep, compressed-air clean, or brush dry powder into the breathing zone.
If the slab powders, stop; do not add surface water impulsively and continue, because uneven wetting can damage form/joining.
Prepare an even slab
Use the studio’s rolling/compression method to reach the project thickness.
The 40310 does not establish thickness.
Before layout, inspect for:
laminations/air pockets;
torn canvas texture;
Compress/smooth only through the clay method.
Allow the slab to rest/firm evenly if cutting now would deform it.
Choose a compatible support
Support the whole slab on a clean flat surface suited to the body.
The support must:
prevent sag/stretch;
allow the knife to complete the clay cut without damaging its edge;
release the clay;
not imprint the keeper;
stay free of grit/dried crumbs;
permit safe rotation.
Do not cut toward a metal table, fastener, stone, or other hard hidden surface.
If the support is sacrificial, verify its fibers/material cannot contaminate the clay.
Inspect the knife
Clean and inspect:
edge and point;
straightness and physical flex;
hardwood handle condition;
dried clay/residue;
High-carbon steel plus wet clay requires compatible cleaning and prompt drying after work.
Do not soak the hardwood joint or leave the knife in a sponge bucket.
Quarantine a loose, bent, chipped, heavily corroded, or uncertain tool.
Establish reference edges
If the slab has no trustworthy straight edge, create a generous reference cut in waste first.
Use a square/template from that reference.

For a matched set, retain one approved template and mark every piece rather than accumulating dimensions piece-to-piece.
Prove guide offset and blade behavior
Place the guide on a scrap/border and run a light trial.

The 4-1/2-inch length does not supply cut offset.
If the blade physically flexes against the guide, reduce force/bite or change support/tool. Do not bend it deliberately.
Position the guide on the keeper
Keep the straightedge/template on the keeper side when practical so a slip enters waste.
Set it without compressing a ridge into the slab.
If a hard guide can damage surface decoration, use compatible spacing/protection or another template method.
Hold/clamp only through a system that does not dent or stretch clay.
Place the support hand behind the guide and outside the projected point path.
Make the straight cut
Present the physical 40310 at the required edge orientation.
For a square edge, keep it vertical by visual/reference method. For an authorized bevel, use the project’s guide/jig; do not estimate a numeric angle from this record.
Draw a smooth controlled full-length stroke where the clay state allows.
Use only enough pressure to pass through clay to the safe support.
Do not saw, twist, or pry.
If the cut stalls or slab bunches, stop, withdraw, and correct state/support/edge—not force.
Manage thick or layered slabs
The facts supply no thickness capacity.
If a slab cannot be cut cleanly in the qualified stroke:
use the project-approved multi-pass method;
flip/register only through a proven process;
use a wire/other clay cutter;
firm/equalize state;
change tool/support.
Do not plunge deeper with the point while the hidden face is unsupported.
For laminate/layered slab, test whether the cut smears interfaces or delaminates colors.
Cut corners without overrunning
For rectangles/polygons:
mark all intersections;
cut one line to its stop;
rotate/reposition support;
cut next line to meet;
lift waste only after both cuts are complete.
Do not run past the corner and create a crack starter in the keeper.
If a tiny fiber/clay bridge remains, support it and complete through a controlled cut rather than tearing.
Cut strips and repeated pieces
Use a fixed template/spacing method.
Cut the outer reference first, then work in an order that leaves the broad slab supporting the keeper pieces.
Do not pull each narrow strip away immediately if that movement would stretch it.
Label or stack on individual support according to the drying/assembly plan.
Periodically verify the template and slab state; repeated cuts can change as the surface dries.

Create bevels deliberately
A leaned blade creates a leaned edge.
For joints, the bevel direction must match assembly.
Mark the long/short face so mirrored pieces do not reverse.
Inspect the cut face; if it cups, smears, or varies, restore support/state/guide.
Do not recut a drifting bevel freehand until the piece is undersize.
Release the piece without stretching
Guard the knife.
Clear waste with a rib/tool rather than pulling the keeper edge.
If the slab sticks:
release the support progressively;
use the studio’s lifting board/bat;
support the full piece;
avoid lifting by a corner or narrow strip.
Move the piece on a flat board.
A perfect cut can be ruined by stretching during the first lift.
Inspect both faces and edges
square/bevel geometry;
top/bottom tear;
crack/air pocket;
Correct only within remaining allowance.
Do not sponge every defect away; over-wetting rounds edges and changes moisture.
Join or condition through the clay method
Scoring/slip, compression, timing, support, drying, firing, and glaze fit belong to the body/project procedure.
The 40310 may make controlled join-surface cuts only if that method specifies it.
Do not use the knife’s product facts to assert join strength or firing performance.
Keep matched pieces at compatible moisture states.
Clean, dry, and record
Clean the 40310 before clay hardens, using a safe compatible method.
Dry high-carbon steel and hardwood promptly; guard/store dry.
Clean the bench through wet/HEPA controls.
Record body/batch/state, slab thickness from project record, support, template, 40310 condition, cut/bevel method, pieces/rejects, joining/drying handoff, operator/date.
Requalify after body, thickness, state, surface, support, template, tool, edge, or design change.
Nest pieces without weakening the keeper
Efficient nesting must not place a narrow neck, corner, or joining edge where earlier cuts leave it unsupported.
Before cutting a group:
place templates with required shrinkage/joining allowance;
maintain body/project spacing;
mark each keeper and orientation;
plan a cut sequence from broad outside waste toward smaller pieces;
preserve lifting/support tabs where needed;
avoid mirrored-part reversal;
reserve test coupons from true matching material.
Do not squeeze one more piece into a layout if its cut overruns another keeper or forces a strip to be lifted unsupported.
After each major cut, confirm the remaining slab has not shifted or dried enough to invalidate the layout.
Route curves and internal openings separately
The 40310 can make controlled curved clay cuts by short tangent segments where the physical blade and project method permit, but no minimum radius is accepted.
For a curve:
use a compatible template;
leave waste outside;
make small slicing advances;
rotate the support, not the wrist alone;
inspect both faces;
stop before the blade/handle bridges.
For an interior opening, use the studio-specified punch/cutter/start method and sacrificial backing. Do not stab into a slab resting above a hidden hand.
If the shape requires tight radii, repeated piercing, or an edge profile the 40310 cannot make cleanly, use the proper ceramics cutter/tool.
Equalize matched pieces after cutting
Fresh cut edges lose moisture differently from broad faces. Narrow strips and small tiles can firm faster than the parent slab.
Move matched pieces through the body/project’s controlled equalization method so they reach joining/forming together.
Keep labels/orientation visible and surfaces fully supported.
Do not stack soft pieces directly where texture transfers, and do not seal them in a way that traps contamination or creates uneven condensation without a studio method.
Before joining, recheck edge state and fit. Do not use water to force a dry edge back into the original state by assumption.
Separate cut accuracy from firing outcome
A precisely cut green slab can still warp, shrink, crack, or mismatch after forming, drying, firing, and glazing.
Record cut dimensions/state, but evaluate finished-system accuracy through the clay body, construction, firing, and glaze process.
Do not claim the 40310 controls fired tolerance.
Use recurring distortion to revise slab preparation, grain/compression, support, joining, drying, kiln loading, or design—not to make ever-more aggressive knife corrections at the green stage.
Keep bodies and colors separated
Colored bodies, stains, grog, paper clay, and glaze-bearing scraps can contaminate another clay stream.
Before changing material:
guard/clean/dry 40310 compatibly;
wet/HEPA-clean guide/support/bench;
change water/sponges as the studio system requires;
identify reclaim and nonreclaim waste;
inspect tool joints for lodged material.
Do not scrape one body from the knife into another reclaim bucket.
Keep the high-carbon blade from staying wet during the cleanup interval.
At the next setup, treat a cleaned support as unproven until it is dry/even and free of hard residue that can emboss the slab or damage the edge.
Keep a labeled clean support for critical surfaces when shared boards repeatedly transfer texture or color. Replace or recondition it through the studio method before defects enter production.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
A very soft slab stretches behind the knife. Firm/equalize and support fully.
A dry slab powders. Stop and enter silica-controlled dry-work disposition.
40310 is declared hard or flexible. Remove it; temper is unpublished.
The guide sits on waste. Reposition to protect the keeper where practical.
The blade leans unintentionally. Reprove orientation/support.
A corner is overrun. Stop cuts at intersections and rotate.
A narrow strip is lifted by one end. Move on full support.
The knife strikes a hard table. Use safe sacrificial support and inspect the edge.
Wet clay remains on high-carbon steel. Clean/dry promptly.
Local slab thickness becomes tool capacity. Keep it project-specific.
