How to Cut Canvas and Duck to Size
Job: lay out and cut one layer of canvas or duck to a specified finished or cut size without skewing the weave, dragging the goods off line, fraying the edge needlessly, or cutting the table beneath.

Time: a short rectangular cut may take minutes once the goods have relaxed; patterned assemblies, coated goods, and pieces that must be squared to the weave take longer in layout than in cutting.
Difficulty: moderate. The knife stroke is simple. Reading the goods, establishing a true reference, and preserving that reference through the cut are the craft.

Everything else: a full-support cutting table; a sacrificial cutting mat or replaceable fiberboard top; a rigid, non-slip straightedge; square; tape measure or rule; chalk, soapstone, or a removable fabric marker proven on a scrap; pattern weights or clamps outside the cutting path; an awl or blunt pick for pulling a cross-grain thread when the construction permits; cut-resistant hand protection selected for the task; eye protection for inspection and sharpening; a fine stone and strop for edge care; and the job's specified edge finish—hem, binding, seam, or compatible fray-control system.
Before layout: identify the material and the dimension you actually owe
“Canvas” describes a family of firm woven fabrics, not one uniform stock. “Duck” commonly names a closely woven canvas, but the bolt in front of you may be cotton, linen, a synthetic fiber, or a blend; it may be loom-state, preshrunk, waxed, acrylic-coated, vinyl-laminated, flame-retardant, mildew-treated, or backed. Those differences change marking, slipping, edge finishing, cleaning, and whether heat may be used. They do not authorize a guessed knife capacity.
Read the work order and the goods label. Record the article identity, face and back, roll direction, specified cut dimensions, required finished dimensions, seam or hem allowance, pattern direction, coating, and any lot or shade restriction. If the drawing gives only a finished size, derive the cut size from the actual seam, hem, binding, or joining specification. Do not “add a little for the hem” from habit. The allowance belongs to the construction drawing.
A trade name such as “numbered duck,” “marine canvas,” or “awning fabric” is not enough to infer any of those facts.
Decide whether this hand-knife method is appropriate. It is for supported, straight or gently swept sizing cuts through goods that a maintained square-point knife severs cleanly. It is not a substitute for a powered straight-knife system, rotary cutter, die, laser, or hot knife specified by a production process. It is not a claim that these Hyde knives can cut a stack.
This guide therefore makes none. Separate plies and cut them individually when a tested shop process does not establish otherwise.
Make a coupon cut. Use an offcut from the same roll. Test the marker, blade action, straightedge grip, coating behavior, and proposed edge finish. A coupon that creeps, gums the edge, cracks at the coating, or pulls yarns is a warning earned cheaply.
Find the grain; do not trust the roll edge blindly
Canvas and duck are woven on two systems of yarn: warp yarns running with the length of the goods and filling, or weft, yarns crossing them. The selvage usually runs with the warp, but the visible roll edge is not automatically a reliable layout line. Finishing, coating, tension on the roll, and previous trimming can leave the edge bowed or skewed.
Unroll enough material for the part plus handling room. Let tightly rolled goods settle flat instead of measuring while curl still holds one side short. Do not stretch the cloth to make a dimension. Smooth from the middle outward with open hands, moving ripples toward the free edges. If a coating or finish has a directional face, keep that face identified with removable tags rather than writing across the usable panel.
Establish one true reference:
For a rectangular part that must be on grain, use a sound selvage only after checking it against several cross-grain observations.
Where the weave is visible and the article tolerates it, tease out a single filling yarn at the waste edge and pull it gently across the width. The resulting channel reveals a true cross-grain line. On dense duck the yarn may break; restart from the same channel rather than pulling neighboring yarns and widening the defect.
On coated or laminated canvas, do not pull a yarn unless the coupon proves that the face will not delaminate or scar. Use measured squaring from a verified reference instead.
If the design intentionally calls for a bias piece, mark it as such and support it throughout. A bias edge is more willing to stretch, grow, and ravel than an edge aligned with either yarn system.
Square the second reference from the first with the largest reliable square the table allows. Check the diagonals only as a confirmation that a rectangle is square; equal diagonals do not prove that the piece follows the weave if the whole layout is skewed across the cloth.
Tool choice inside the exact four-model set
The square-point pattern has a long cutting edge and a blunt end. The edge performs the draw cut; the square end is less inclined than a pointed knife to dive into the sacrificial layer or a second sheet. That protection is useful, not absolute: enough downward force will still cut the support or any material underneath.
60570: the everyday five-inch standard-production choice for panel sizing, awning and upholstery yardage, and runs that still need easy steering. Choose it when control matters more than the longest possible stroke.
60630: the six-inch sibling for a longer draw through the same general class of work. Its extra reach reduces resets on broad straight runs. Do not convert that reach into an unsupported material-thickness rating.
60110: a six-inch Black & Silver® square point whose accepted line record places it at 15 gauge (.072 inch) and identifies hardened high-carbon steel, hardwood handle, riveted blade, and ferrule construction. It is the stiffer six-inch choice within this guide when the goods make the lighter standard-production blade chatter, while still remaining canvas and flexible-sheet work—not reinforced belting.
60115: the eight-inch member of that same accepted Black & Silver® length ladder. It earns its place on long, straight production cuts where a full-edge draw means fewer stops. It gives up close steering and demands more deliberate control at the far end of the blade.
This guide calls their edge line straight but does not call either blade flat-ground or hollow-ground. It also does not infer a hidden performance difference beyond the recorded dimensions and construction.
A longer knife is not automatically “better.” Use the shortest of these four that completes the line cleanly without turning the job into many disconnected chops. Tight curves, interior plunge starts, powered stack cutting, hot sealing, and close trimming around installed hardware are different jobs and may require different tools.
Layout: build the cut before picking up the knife
Support the whole piece. The panel and the waste should both lie on the table. A hanging waste strip pulls the cut open, changes the line angle, and can drag the good panel over the edge. Add an auxiliary table or roller support for wide goods; do not let an assistant hold the waste in the air.
Put a sacrificial layer under every cut. A self-healing mat or replaceable cutting board protects the blade and bench. Steel, concrete, glass, and fastener heads ruin an edge. Cardboard can collapse into corrugations and steer a long blade; use it only if the coupon proves it stable enough for the required tolerance.
Relax and align without tensioning. Smooth out storage curl and wrinkles. Weight the cloth in several places outside the finished part. The goal is stationary material, not stretched material. If the part snaps smaller when the weights come off, the layout was made under tension and is wrong.
Mark reference points, then connect them. Measure from the verified grain or geometric reference, not successively from yesterday's cut edge. Small chained measurement errors become a visibly tapered long panel.
Mark the cut side and waste side. Put small X marks in the waste. This prevents an operator from placing the straightedge on the wrong side of the line and subtracting the line width from the finished panel.
Place the straightedge over the kept piece. If the knife wanders away from the guide, it then moves into waste rather than the finished part. Use a guide tall and rigid enough that the square end can register against it without climbing. Add a non-slip backing or weights; never put fingertips over the edge to make up for a slippery guide.
Plan the stroke and your body position. Clear the entire blade path, including the follow-through beyond the marked line. Move clamps, tape measures, cords, and offcuts. Stand so the pull comes from the shoulder with a neutral wrist and so you can finish without leaning across the edge.
For repeated rectangles, make a physical stop or template only after the first piece has been measured and checked. Verify the stop periodically; lint, coating residue, or a folded selvage trapped against it can shift every later part.
The cut: low blade, stable cloth, complete draw
Inspect the knife immediately before use
Look along both blade faces and the cutting edge under good light. Remove the knife from service if the blade is cracked, nicked deeply, bent, loose at the handle, or if the hardwood handle is split or splintered. A slight dullness is corrected before cutting; added hand force is not an acceptable substitute. OSHA's hand-tool guidance identifies misuse and poor maintenance as central hazards and states that knives should be sharp and damaged tools removed from service (OSHA, *Hand and Power Tools*).
Take a safe working grip
Wrap the knife handle fully; keep the index finger on the handle, not extended along the cutting edge. The guiding hand belongs on the top of the straightedge, well behind its protected side, never pinching the cloth beside the line. If the guide cannot stay put without a hand near the blade, improve the guide setup.
Wear a task-rated cut-resistant glove on the non-knife hand at minimum when the hazard assessment calls for it; production shops may require protection on both hands. The glove is cut-resistant, not cut-proof, and does not make a hand in the cutting path acceptable. OSHA specifically cautions that cut-resistant gloves do not eliminate the hazard and must suit the job (OSHA cuts-and-lacerations guidance). Wear close-fitting work clothing and secure loose sleeves, jewelry, and hair. Eye protection is prudent when inspecting a damaged edge or sharpening; ordinary clean canvas cutting creates no inherent respirator requirement. A coating, contamination, dust, or treatment may create one—follow its SDS and workplace hazard assessment rather than inventing generic PPE.
Start from an accessible edge
The square point is deliberately poor at plunging into the middle of a panel. Begin at the material edge or at a pre-established opening made by the process's correct tool. Set the rear portion of the cutting edge just beyond the near edge of the goods so the first motion enters as a slice rather than a downward chop.
Lower the blade angle
Lay the knife low enough that forward or pulling travel does most of the severing. A steep blade ploughs: it pushes a ridge of cloth ahead, bends the yarns away from the mark, and finally tears them under excess force. A low blade shears yarns in sequence. Keep the blade face registered to the straightedge without twisting it against the guide.
Draw the full useful edge
Pull in one smooth, controlled travel, letting new portions of the edge enter the cut. The 60570 and 60110 favor manageable control; the 60630 and especially 60115 reward a longer shoulder-led stroke. Do not flick the final inch of a long blade. Follow through until the edge clears the far boundary, then lift.
If the coupon established that one draw does not sever the article, repeat in the same path with light, controlled passes. Do not increase force until the straightedge bows or the cloth stretches. This is progressive cutting, not a promise that any named ply count or weight class will yield.
Advance without losing the line
On a run longer than one comfortable stroke, stop with an overlap in already severed material. Reposition your body before repositioning the knife. Begin the next draw within the previous cut and carry through the uncut section. Starting exactly at the visible endpoint often leaves a small uncut bridge or notch—a stroke-junction defect. The longer models reduce how often this transition occurs; they do not remove the need to control it.
Let the offcut remain supported
Do not pull the waste away while fibers still connect it. Finish the cut, set the knife in protected storage, then lift the waste. Tugging during the cut loads unsevered yarns and turns a clean knife line into a tear.
Check the piece before finishing the edge
Release the weights and let the panel lie naturally. Check length and width from the same references used in layout. Check square at multiple corners and compare diagonals if the part is rectangular. Sight along both cut edges for bow, scallops, or stroke-junction steps. Finally, compare a yarn line near the cut with the intended grain direction; a geometrically correct rectangle can still be off grain.
Do not trim every small fuzz as though it were dimensional material. Loose fiber at a raw edge is an edge-finishing issue. Re-cut only when the actual cloth body lies beyond tolerance.
Control fray according to the assembly—not according to habit
The knife makes the dimension; the construction makes the edge durable.
Sewn seam or turned hem: preserve the exact allowance specified by the pattern. Handle the piece flat until it is sewn. A line of stay stitching may control a vulnerable edge if the sewing specification permits it.
Bound edge: cut to the binding system's required dimension and keep the edge supported until binding. Do not coat an edge that must accept adhesive or stitching unless compatibility is established.
Raw service edge: some filters, drop cloths, temporary covers, or internal plies intentionally remain raw. Minimize handling and confirm that a raw edge is allowed.
Chemical fray control: test the exact product on a coupon for staining, stiffness, coating attack, flame-performance effects, and later bond or stitch compatibility. Follow its manufacturer instructions.
Heat sealing or hot cutting: only for a verified thermoplastic article and an approved process with fire and fume controls. Cotton duck does not become safely “sealed” by an open flame. These Hyde hand knives neither heat-seal nor authorize that operation.
For storage between cutting and sewing, keep parts flat or roll them on a core large enough not to crease them. Do not fold a coated face sharply without confirmation that the coating tolerates it. Label orientation, face, lot, and part identity on a removable tag rather than on the usable face.
What goes wrong—and the recovery
The cloth bunches ahead of the blade. The edge is dull, the blade is too steep, the goods are slack, or the straightedge is dragging the surface. Restore the edge, flatten and weight the goods without stretching them, lower the blade, and restart in the existing kerf.
The cut curves away from the guide. The knife is being wrist-steered, the straightedge moved, or hanging waste is pulling the panel. Support both sides, secure the guide, and pull from the shoulder. Put the guide over the kept part so any new drift goes into waste.
The edge is saw-toothed at every restart. Each stroke begins at the previous endpoint instead of overlapping it. Dress only proud defects that remain outside tolerance; on the next part, overlap the severed path and consider the longer appropriate model.
Warp and filling no longer meet the panel squarely. The layout followed a bowed roll edge or the material was stretched during marking. Do not “correct” the visible weave by stretching the cut panel. Re-establish grain on the remaining yardage and determine whether the cut part can be reoriented or must be rejected.
The cut dimension changes after weights come off. The material was measured under tension or before roll curl relaxed. Let it recover, then re-measure. If it is oversize and the grain remains correct, re-trim from a new reference; if undersize, there is no honest knife fix.
The face coating cracks or lifts. The article was folded too sharply, pulled-yarn squaring was inappropriate, or the blade/marker/edge chemistry is incompatible. Stop production and return to the coupon. Do not hide delamination under binding without approval.
The raw edge ravels during handling. Too much movement occurred before the specified seam, hem, or binding. Lay the part flat, remove only loose yarns that do not change body dimension, and apply the approved temporary or final edge control. Never “straighten” the edge by pulling a running yarn.
The knife skips, chatters, or needs body weight. It is dull, damaged, the wrong member of the four for the desired stroke/control balance, or the material lies outside this method. Sharpen and retest a coupon. If the test still requires unsafe force, stop; a powered or differently patterned cutter may own the job.
The support is scored. The square end reduces puncture risk but is not a depth stop. Replace a deeply grooved sacrificial surface before the groove starts steering later cuts. Never cut directly over another good panel.
Adhesive or coating gums the edge. Clean it only with a product approved for both the blade and the article, away from ignition sources and according to its SDS. A loaded edge drags yarns and encourages unsafe force.
Edge care and safe storage
These are maintained high-carbon hand knives. Their advantage exists only while the edge is clean and keen.
Wipe lint and compatible residue from the blade after the job. Dry it immediately; do not put a damp carbon-steel blade into a cover.
Hone lightly and often on a fine stone, maintaining the existing bevel rather than creating a new angle from guesswork. Finish on a strop if that is the shop's established method. Protect eyes during sharpening and keep fingertips behind the edge.
Remove a knife with a deep chip, crack, permanent bend, loose blade, split handle, or loose ferrule/rivets from service for qualified repair or replacement. Do not grind away a structural defect.
Apply only a light rust preventive compatible with the next material, then wipe it off before cutting clean, light-colored, bondable, or paintable goods. Oil transferred to canvas can become a permanent stain or a failed adhesive seam.
Store the edge fully covered in a rack or purpose-made guard. Do not improvise a too-short sheath or market one as compatible.
History footnote: sailcloth, shoe knives, and the unchanged physics of a draw cut
Canvas and duck earned their industrial reputation long before synthetic tarpaulins. Wide, dense goods had to be laid flat, held true, and severed without distorting the weave—the same bench problem this guide addresses.
The square-point knife came from another flexible-material trade: shoemaking. Hyde's official history places Isaac P. Hyde's knife-making business in Southbridge, Massachusetts, in the early-to-mid 1870s; the company's own pages do not agree on one founding year, so this guide does not choose one (Hyde Tools, “Our Story”, Hyde Industrial Blade Solutions, history). The blunt-ended shoe and mill pattern migrated naturally from leather to rubber, upholstery, and canvas because its useful geometry traveled well: a long maintained edge for a draw cut, with no spear point leading into the layer below.
By 1887, a U.S. patent for a powered cloth-cutting machine explicitly described its straight knife as producing a drawing or shear-like cut ([U.S. Patent 372,926]( Mechanization increased stack and production capacity; it did not change the cutting principle. This hand method remains intentionally single-layer and supported: keep the goods still, keep the blade moving, and make the yarns meet a slicing edge instead of a wedge.

The edge grind of 60110 and 60115 is absent from the accepted claims. Do not add “flat-ground,” “hollow-ground,” or another grind from inference.
Identify a verified carry/storage product for 60115 before linking one; the known cataloged straight-knife sheaths are too short for it.
Keep Hyde's founding date as “early-to-mid 1870s” until the company's conflicting official dates are reconciled.
