How to Cut Asphalt Shingles

Job: cut asphalt shingles cleanly — to a course at the rake, wall, valley, and every penetration; caps and starters at the tailgate; and the repair cuts that open a roof back up.

Time: the cutting itself is minutes. A course end is one score and a snap; a stack of caps is a single tailgate session. But the cuts are threaded through the whole roof, so treat knife work as a habit running across a one- to several-day job, not a task you finish and put down.

Difficulty: the cut is easy — if you can score and snap a sheet of drywall you can cut a shingle. The difficulty in this job is not the blade. It is that you make every cut on a slope, usually in heat, and the honest hard part is the roof itself.

Everything else (this store doesn't sell it, and you need it): a fall-protection system — roof anchor, rope, rope grab, and a full-body harness — which outranks every tool on this page; a speed square or a straight offcut shingle for a straightedge; a chalk line and tape; sturdy soft-soled boots and knee protection; a roofing nailer or hammer and nails; a tube of roofing cement to re-bed lifted tabs; a fine pocket sharpening stone (the entire argument for the fixed knife); a hard-sided sharps container for spent blades; and cool drinking water.

Before you start: the roof, the material, and the knife

Settle the height before you settle the cut — this is step one on purpose. You are about to kneel on an incline and make pull cuts *toward your own body*, the one stroke every ground-level rule forbids. The knife is a footnote to the real hazard, which is the fall. Federal rule is not vague about it: workers in residential construction six feet or more above a lower level must be protected by a guardrail, a safety net, or a personal fall-arrest system (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13); OSHA — *Fall Protection in Residential Construction*). Set the anchor and clip in before the knife leaves the pouch. And because asphalt roofing is one of the trades OSHA inspects most often for heat, work the cool hours and keep water, rest, and shade in the plan — not as comfort, as hazard control ([OSHA — *Heat: Water.

Understand what fights the blade: a shingle is sandpaper that thinks it's a roof. The weather face is mineral granule — crushed stone bonded into asphalt — and it is abrasive by design, because that armor is what survives forty years of sun and rain. Drag any edge across that face and you are grinding it, not cutting with it; an edge dies in a few strokes. The back is different: smooth asphalt over a reinforcing mat. So the first law of the trade, and the sentence this whole guide turns on, is cut from the back, not through the granules. Flip the shingle. Every method below is a way of honoring that one rule.

Pick your knife — and the choice is a real fork, not a preference. There are two honest answers, and Hyde has printed both for a century. The maintained answer is a fixed roofing knife: one ground high-carbon blade — the short-point 22310 or the stiffer Black & Silver 22320 — that you hone on a pocket stone in thirty seconds on the ridge and again at the tailgate. It has no slide to pack with asphalt and grit, nothing to drop but the whole knife, and no loose razor blades to change with your feet on a slope. Crews that shingle every day and own a stone run fixed knives. The fed answer is a 42200 hook blade in the utility knife already on your belt (the 42020, or the 42083 whose offset head adds leverage on long pulls): the hook drops over the shingle's edge and self-feeds as you pull, cutting from the smooth back while its flat belly rides over — and never scores — the underlayment or the course below. When it drags, flip it end-for-end to the second hook; when both are gone, snap in a new one. Anyone who roofs twice a year should run the hook and not pretend otherwise. Between the two sits the 20550, the Black & Silver crossover built for the mechanic who lays floors on weekdays and roofs on weekends — one heavy .072" hollow-ground blade for both trades. The rule at that fork is simple: a roofer whose *trade* is roofing buys the roofing knife; the floor-first buyer who also roofs buys the crossover. Keep a straight blade in whatever utility knife you carry regardless — the hook cannot pierce or start a cut in the middle of a shingle, so mid-field relief cuts and penetration openings are straight-blade or fixed-point work.

Read the weather in the material. Asphalt has a temper and your knife hand learns it in the first hour. Cold shingles are brittle: below roughly jacket weather they crack past the score and shatter at the fold, so cold-day crews keep bundles somewhere warm, snap gently, or skip the snap and draw the cut full-depth instead. Hot shingles are soft: the asphalt drags, gums the blade, and tears instead of parting, so hot-day crews cut early, wipe the blade often, and let a deeper score do more of the separating. Warm — not hot — is the shingle's easy middle, and it is worth timing cuts to it.

Cutting to a course

Score the back and snap it — the cut that defines the trade. Measure, flip the shingle face-down, and strike your mark on the smooth back. Square a speed square or a straight offcut to the line and score with one or two firm pulls — not a sawing dozen, which only wears the edge. Then fold the shingle over the score and snap it: the break follows the scored line the way drywall and acrylic follow theirs, and the cut edge comes off clean enough to lay. With a fixed knife the short point rides through the score without plunging past it. With a hook blade you skip the fold entirely — hook the edge and pull along the line, letting the throat sever the shingle from behind. Either way the granule face never meets your edge.

When you can't flip it, draw-cut in place. Plenty of cuts happen on the roof with the shingle already positioned — a field piece run long to a chalk line, a tab notched around a vent. Here you cut face-up and full-depth: lay a scrap shingle under the cut as a sacrificial surface so the blade finishes into asphalt and not into the deck or the good course below, keep the blade low, and take short overlapping pulls along the line. A hook blade shines at this — its belly guards whatever is underneath — but it must start over an edge; to open a hole in the middle of a shingle, pierce with a straight point first, then pull.

Trim to the course at rakes, walls, and penetrations. Every course ends at a rake edge, a sidewall, a valley, or something sticking through the roof, and every one of those endings is a knife cut. Measure the gap, cut the shingle to width from the back by score-and-snap, and set it so the factory offset and the exposure line still march straight. At a wall or a vent, cut to fit and leave the flashing to do the sealing — the knife makes the shingle fit the detail; it does not make the detail waterproof.

The valley — the cut where honesty matters most. In a closed-cut valley, the field shingles from one plane run across the valley center and get trimmed back in place along a chalk line — a long cut, made on the roof, through only the top layer, with the opposing course and the valley underlayment alive directly under your edge. It is the most depth-critical cut in shingle work, and here the guide will not oversell the fixed knife: an open point *can* over-plunge, and a captured hook *cannot*. The trade's own answer is to split the kit — many roofers carry a 42200 hook blade for the valley trim alone and the fixed knife for everything else — and that is good practice, not an admission of weakness. If the fixed knife stays in your hand, cut it low-angled, tip biting just through the top shingle, in short overlapping pulls with a depth check every stroke. Caps, ridges, and starters — the tailgate production cuts. These are the high-volume, bench-condition cuts where the maintained fixed edge earns its keep, because the cost of a cut becomes a few seconds of stone time spread across the day instead of another blade out of the dispenser. Hip and ridge caps are cut down from three-tab stock — two angled back-side cuts per shingle to taper the buried lap so each cap nests over the last. Starter strips are field shingles with their tabs sheared off so the sealant band lands at the eave where the wind wants to lift it. Repair cuts — breaking the roof loose. Replacing a shingle starts by un-gluing the roof: every tab above the damage is bonded to its course by a factory self-seal strip, and no shingle comes free until those seals are broken. Slide the blade in flat under each sealed tab — blind, under spring load — and work the bond apart tip-first, which is exactly the prying-adjacent duty the short-point 22310 is built to survive and the duty that snaps fine points and segmented blades. With the seals broken and the nails pulled, the dead shingle slides out (or gets cut out in pieces), and the replacement is trimmed to width from the back and slid home. Pick a mild day: warm enough that tabs flex without cracking, cool enough that seals release instead of stringing. One boundary here is not optional, and it is the same one every trade document in this catalog carries: old roofing — particularly pre-1980s felts, cements, and mastics — can contain asbestos. If you are cutting into or tearing off an existing roof of unknown age, test before you disturb it. That is an abatement decision made before the knife comes out, not a cutting technique. After each cut, and keeping the edge

Renew the edge often — a dull blade is the start of every bad cut. Granule wear is continuous, so roofing sharpening is frequent and brief, never rare and heroic. With a fixed knife: a fine pocket stone, the bevel angle held steady, a few strokes a side, the burr stropped off on a pant leg — under a minute, several times a day, done where you kneel. The stone riding in the pouch is the whole fixed-knife argument in one sentence. With a hook blade: flip to the second hook the moment the pull starts to drag, and snap in a fresh blade when both hooks are spent — the fed edge's entire point is that renewal is instant and free of the stone. Either way, the mistake to avoid is *forcing a tired edge through granules* to save a blade or a hone; that is slower, more dangerous, and harder on the tool than the thirty-second fix.

Wipe it down, and bin the sharps. Asphalt comes off the blade with a mineral-spirits rag before it bakes on. A fixed carbon blade gets a dry wipe after sweat- or rain-wet work and a film of oil before it sits — high-carbon steel pays for its easy edge with a rust habit. Spent hook blades and snapped segments are stout, double-hooked pieces of steel: they go into a hard-sided sharps container, never a pocket or a trash bag, and never off the edge of the roof. What goes wrong (and the fix)

"My blade was dead in three strokes." You cut through the granule face. Flip the shingle and cut from the smooth back — the mineral surface is abrasive rock and it will kill any edge that meets it head-on. This is the single most common asphalt-cutting mistake, and it is the reason the whole trade cuts face-down.

"The cut is ragged and wanders off the line." A dull or a limber blade. A tired edge tears instead of parting, and a blade that flexes stores your force and lets it go in skips — which is exactly what the 22320's one printed virtue, "stiff," answers in laminated and doubled stock. Renew the edge, and let the score, not brute force, steer the snap.

"The shingle cracked past my score at the fold." Cold, brittle asphalt. Warm the bundle, snap more gently, or stop snapping and draw the cut full-depth instead. Cold shingles don't fold; they shatter.

"The blade gummed and dragged, and the cut tore." Hot, soft asphalt. Cut in the cool of the day, wipe the blade often, and score deeper so less of the separation depends on slicing through soft tar.

"I scored the course below / the underlayment in the valley." An open point plunged past the top layer. This is the cut to run a captured hook blade on — its throat severs the top shingle while its belly rides over everything beneath. Split the kit for the valley.

"The course came out crooked." A miscut width, or a piece set without re-checking the exposure and offset lines. Measure to the course lines, not to the last shingle's edge, and dry-set the piece before you nail it.

Notice what the founding act actually was: a man cutting roofing with a knife. Everything you did today — every rake, valley, cap, and repair — is the same cut the industry was born from, and the roofing knife has barely changed because the material's one demand hasn't: cut it from the back, and keep your edge.
