This guide teaches the protected cut without replacing those instructions.
Job: trim the cut-side asphalt shingles of a manufacturer-permitted closed-cut valley while preserving the shingles and water-shedding layers beneath them.
Time: no honest universal estimate. Roof access, valley length, product and weather verification, the approved cutting method, inspection, and any recovery control the duration.
Difficulty: advanced and high consequence. The visible line is only the edge of a layered drainage detail; a straight-looking cut can still hide a scored lower shingle or damaged valley lining.
Its 2024 catalog claim is “Stiff, high-carbon steel blade.” Its current exact-model manufacturer page, observed 2026-07-24 and identified by SKU 22320, additionally says the blade scores and cuts roofing and drywall and pries asphalt shingles apart. That live duty statement is exact-product evidence for roofing-material work, not a closed-valley approval, depth-control claim, or permission to pry a completed valley assembly.
Everything else: exact current shingle and accessory instructions · approved valley detail · authorized access, fall-protection, rescue, and temporary-weather plans · system-directed layout tools · a clean sacrificial backer or cut shield approved for the assembly · the authorized cutter · controlled sharps and waste storage · and the responsible inspection and repair contacts.
Decide the valley system before reaching for a knife
A valley concentrates runoff from two roof planes. In a closed-cut valley, shingles from one plane run beneath the adjoining plane’s shingles, and the upper plane terminates on a cut line. Woven, open-metal, California-style, and closed-cut valleys change the layer order and water path; they are not cosmetic substitutes.
Before installation or trimming, identify:
the exact shingle manufacturer, family, and product;
whether its current instructions permit a closed-cut valley on this slope, project, warranty, and jurisdiction;
the required deck condition, valley liner or leak barrier, underlayment relationship, plane order, course extension, starter treatment, flashing, and terminations;
the manufacturer’s centerline datum, cut-line location, fastener exclusion and added-fastener rules, corner treatment, and cement or hand-seal instruction;
any project drawing, code, enhanced-warranty, or weather requirement that narrows the base instructions.
Do not borrow one manufacturer’s cut-line offset, fastener zone, liner width, cement bead, or corner clip for another system. Record the controlling document title, revision or access date, page or section, and exact shingle on a compact valley card. Mark the under-running plane, cut-side plane, centerline, keep side, waste side, prohibited-fastener area, and inspection hold point on that card.
Close access, deck, weather, and concealed-layer gates
This page does not authorize roof access. The site plan must establish fall protection, rescue, material handling, dropped-object control, and a stable working position. A sagging, wet, rotten, delaminated, contaminated, or otherwise suspect deck is not ready for a finish cut.
Weather changes both footing and shingle behavior:
Hot shingles soften, scuff, stretch, and accept an accidental cut easily. Minimize traffic and twisting, keep cut waste from bonding to the roof, and follow hot-weather instructions. Malarkey’s official hot-weather bulletin goes further for its covered work: do not trim on top of installed shingles or underlayment, and use a hook-blade knife for the overlying closed-valley shingles.
Cold shingles resist the blade, crack at bends, and may not conform to the valley. Do not answer resistance by bearing down. Warm or stage materials only as the exact manufacturer permits, change to its cold-weather method, or stop.
Wet, frosted, windy, or contaminated work fails both footing and material-control tests. Stop under the site and product rules, protect the incomplete roof by the approved temporary-weather plan, and resume only after acceptance.
Before the adjoining plane conceals the valley, photograph and accept the deck, liner or leak barrier, underlayment laps, flashing, course order, fastener-free zones, transitions, and eave-to-head path. If a lower shingle, lining, flashing, underlayment, cable, or deck has already been cut, punctured, wrinkled, displaced, or contaminated, do not hide it behind the finish trim. Use the exact written repair route.
Choose the cutter and protection method as one system
The registered product graph is 22310 and 22320. Both are fixed roofing-knife candidates; neither supplies a valley design or a guaranteed cutting depth.
Hyde’s exact-model page identifies roofing and drywall cutting, hardened, tempered, and honed high-carbon cutlery steel, and a hardwood handle. Choose it when the roof system permits a fixed open-point knife and the cut-side shingle can be positively isolated from the live layers below.
The 2024 catalog documents a stiff, high-carbon steel blade. The current Hyde 22320 page supplies an exact-model application statement: score and cut roofing and drywall, and pry asphalt shingles apart. Evidence scope is current first-party exact-model product page, SKU 22320, observed 2026-07-24. The live page expands the stale 2026-07-22 packet snapshot, whose captured description was empty. Choose 22320 where a stiff maintained blade is useful in dense or laminated stock and the same protection conditions required for any open point are satisfied.
Straight/open point or hook
Use a fixed straight/open-point knife only when all three conditions are true:
the exact shingle instructions and site procedure allow that cutter class;
a clean sacrificial backer or approved cut shield can remain continuously between the cut-side shingle and every live layer below;
the operator can keep the point shallow and visible by short, controlled passes without forcing the shingle or working beyond a stable reach.
Use an authorized hook-pattern cutter when the upper shingle must be cut in place but the lower course cannot be safely exposed to an open point, when hot material makes an overcut especially likely, or when the manufacturer names or prefers a hook. A hook reduces plunge risk because its cutting edge works in a captured throat; it does not make the job automatic. The hook must engage only the upper waste edge. If it catches the lower course, folds the keep side, tears the mat, or cannot start without a blind plunge, stop.
This guide makes no unverified host fit, blade seating, geometry, or compatibility claim for them. Select a complete, compatible hook tool under its own instructions.
The actionable handoff
If an open point cannot be positively isolated, do not “try one careful stroke.” Pouch the fixed knife, mark the unfinished limit, and move to the ground or designated protected station. There, install or select the authorized hook system, confirm the blade is seated and retained, account for removed sharps, and make a controlled offcut test in the same shingle type. Return only with the cutter closed, sheathed, or otherwise protected under its instructions. At the valley, start the hook from an exposed waste edge with the throat around the top shingle only.
Prepare the line and the protected cutting station
Read the valley card back against the roof. Confirm the actual plane order, centerline, cut-line mark, keep side, waste side, fasteners, transitions, and closure steps. Sight the chalk line from both ends. A bowed line, displaced course, bridging at the valley break, or hidden fastener near the intended cut is a layout problem, not something the knife should steer around.
Inspect the cutter before each run. The edge must be sharp and clean enough to score without heavy force; the handle or blade carrier must be secure; asphalt buildup, a chipped point, looseness, or a poorly retained hook takes the tool out of service. Hone a maintained blade or change a replaceable blade only at the authorized protected station, never while balanced over the valley.
For an open-point cut, slide a clean, flat sacrificial shingle offcut or other site-approved cut shield under the cut-side shingle and above the lower course. It must be broad enough to stay beneath the complete reachable stroke, smooth enough not to abrade or contaminate the lower shingle, and stiff enough that the point cannot fold it into the live layer. The backer is a movable shield, not a pry bar: do not force it through sealant, over a fastener, or under a nailed keep-side area; do not crease the shingle over it; and never use the valley liner, flashing, or lower shingle itself as the cutting board. Keep the backer’s leading edge visible beyond the next stroke and advance it with the cut.
If the top shingle cannot be lifted enough to admit and advance the backer without damage, use the authorized hook handoff or stop for a different approved method. A hidden “backer” that cannot be seen and controlled is not protection.
Make the protected cut
Set body and hands
Work from the stable position established by the access plan, with the torso offset to the keep side rather than directly in the projected blade path. Keep feet, knees, harness components, hoses, and clothing outside the stroke corridor. Work only the line that can be reached without leaning, twisting, or moving the feet.
Use a full, closed grip on the handle close enough to the blade end for control but entirely behind the guard, ferrule, or blade heel. Keep the wrist neutral; do not put an index finger ahead of the handle or use the second hand to drive the knife. The non-cutting hand stays upslope and on the keep side. It may stabilize the shingle or a handled shield outside the projected stroke, but it never goes beneath the cut line, in front of the point, or on the waste immediately ahead of the blade.
Before changing position, stop the cut and sheath, close, or pouch the cutter. Never crawl or step with an exposed blade.
Cut in a controlled direction
For a fixed straight/open-point knife, begin at the lower end of a reachable segment and progress upslope. Make each short draw back downslope into the already opened kerf, with the body offset laterally so the continuation of the stroke misses the torso and supporting leg. Starting each pass in the known cut and drawing into open waste gives the point an exit; pushing a point blindly uphill under uncut material does not.
Lay the blade body low—nearly parallel to the roof plane—so only the edge and the minimum useful point enter the top shingle. Keep the edge square to the intended line and bias any unavoidable wander toward waste, never into the keep side. Do not specify or measure a universal blade angle: handle geometry and shingle construction vary. “Low” means the point cannot reach the backer under normal hand pressure, and that condition must be proven on an offcut before the roof cut.
Let passes, not force, control depth
The first pass is a score through the granule/asphalt surface of the upper shingle, not an attempt to sever every laminate. Use only enough force to establish a continuous groove. Keep the backer visible, stop at the end of the stable reach, and inspect the groove and shield. Make subsequent short passes in the same kerf until the waste separates. Laminated, doubled, cold, or resistant material earns more shallow passes, a sharper edge, a different cutter, or a weather stop—not a steeper point or a two-handed shove.
Overlap strokes slightly so no uncut bridge tempts a side load. If resistance changes suddenly, the blade chatters, the shingle bunches, the backer moves, or the point disappears deeper than the score, freeze the hand and withdraw along the kerf. Do not twist the knife free against the keep edge.
With an authorized hook tool, engage from the exposed waste edge so the throat captures the upper shingle only. Hold the carrier low, support the shingle without putting the free hand in the travel path, and pull in short sections along the line. A sharp hook may separate the layer in one controlled pass; if it drags, do not saw or bear down. Withdraw, inspect seating and edge condition at the protected station, and resume only after the top-layer engagement can be demonstrated.
After each reachable section, remove the waste deliberately; do not tear it free against an unfinished bridge or leave it to bond to a hot roof. Advance the backer, re-sight the line, reset the body, and continue. At a course joint, laminate transition, valley head, or termination, slow down and follow the system detail rather than carrying the previous motion through a changed stack.
Keep manufacturer layout, fastening, corner, and weather rules attached to the cut
The protected technique does not float free of the roof system:
Owens Corning Duration Series: its current closed-cut sequence specifies the valley liner, plane coverage, centerline relationship, fastening restriction, chalk line, protected trimming, upper-corner treatment, and roofing-cement closure. Use its current values and figure only for a covered Duration system. The knife technique above answers “how to protect the lower layer,” not “where the line goes.”
GAF: the current Steep-Slope Pro Field Guide has a product-compatibility chart and a separate closed-cut sequence covering leak barrier, roof-deck protection, plane order, starter and course extension, fastener exclusion and added fastening, trim, corner clip, and cement. Read the exact shingle wrapper as well; do not lift GAF’s dimensions into another system.
IKO: its current educational material describes closed-cut construction but recommends open metal valleys for architectural or laminated shingles. The exact wrapper, program manual, local code, and project decide whether a closed-cut valley is available at all.
Malarkey: its official hot-weather bulletin warns against cutting over installed shingles or underlayment and identifies a hook-blade knife as the best tool for the closed-cut-valley trim under those conditions. That is an actionable product-system weather branch, not a universal endorsement of every hook.
Fastener compliance is checked before and after trimming. A fastener in a prohibited location or under the cut path is not a blade obstacle to notch around; stop and use the system correction. Complete corner clipping, cement, hand sealing, and closure only after the protected cut and lower-layer inspection pass. Apply only the exact compatible material, amount, placement, and weather conditions the selected system directs.
Inspect before closure
Inspect while the cut edge and underlying course can still be examined:
the trim follows the approved line without reverse cuts, tears, or uncut bridges;
the keep-side mat and laminate are intact;
the sacrificial backer shows any point contact, and every corresponding location below is exposed and checked;
no lower shingle, valley lining, underlayment, flashing, or deck is scored, punctured, folded, displaced, or contaminated;
lower courses remain flat in the intended drainage relationship;
fasteners and exclusion zones match the controlling detail;
cut fragments, chalk debris, loose blades, packaging, and contaminants are removed;
the specified corner and closure work can be completed without concealing a defect;
upper and lower terminations and intersecting details remain accepted.
The handoff records product, document revision or access date, installer, weather, cutter and protection method, inspection result, deviations, rulings, and open items.
Stop and recovery branches
The line wanders
Stop before steering sharply back. Preserve the lower layer, mark the affected course, and compare the error with the manufacturer’s replacement or repair route. Do not redraw the chalk line to legitimize the cut, and do not disguise lost keep-side material with cement.
The backer or hook may have lost isolation
Stop closure and treat the lower layer as potentially contacted. Inspect the shield for a cut witness, then expose the corresponding lower shingle by an approved route. If integrity cannot be demonstrated, obtain the manufacturer’s repair or replacement decision. “I did not feel it” is not an inspection.
The blade hits a fastener or hard obstruction
Withdraw along the kerf. Do not lever, twist, or cut around it. Identify the obstruction and reconcile it with the fastener and layer plan.
The shingle tears, cracks, delaminates, or bunches
Stop forcing it. Check temperature, support, line, edge condition, and cutter choice. Replace any shingle the product instructions do not accept. Cement is a closure material where specified, not a universal repair for damaged reinforcement.
Liner, underlayment, flashing, deck, or lower shingle is cut
Stop roofing and protect the opening under the approved temporary-weather plan. Document every affected layer. The exact layer manufacturer, shingle manufacturer, designer, or installer of record controls repair or replacement; this guide supplies no generic patch size, overlap, primer, sealant, roller, cure, or fastener procedure.
Weather changes or water enters
Sheath the cutter, secure waste and materials, and execute the temporary-weather plan. Record what was open and what became wet. Resume only after footing, substrate, materials, and the weather window are accepted again.
Can I use the 22310 because Hyde says it cuts roofing? Yes as a candidate when the exact roof system permits a fixed knife and a continuously visible backer isolates the lower layers. Hyde’s roofing duty does not itself approve a closed-valley method.
Does Hyde now state an application for 22320? Yes. The current exact-model SKU 22320 page says it scores and cuts roofing and drywall and pries asphalt shingles apart. The older local packet captured an empty description. Neither source gives 22320 a valley-depth guarantee.
22310 or 22320? Both are registered. The roof-system cutter rule and ability to isolate the lower layer decide before either product distinction.
When should I hand off to a hook? When the manufacturer names or prefers it, hot-weather instructions prohibit cutting over installed work with a straight edge, or a backer cannot continuously isolate an open point. Change or inspect the tool at a protected station, engage from a free waste edge, and capture only the top layer.
Can a backer make any straight-blade cut safe? No. It must be approved, visible, movable without damaging the assembly, and wide enough for the entire stroke. If it cannot meet those conditions, stop or use the authorized hook/different method.
How hard should I press? Only hard enough to establish the score. Deepen the same kerf with controlled passes. Sudden resistance calls for inspection, not more force.
Where does the chalk line go and which plane runs through? The exact current shingle-system instructions decide. Manufacturer examples are not universal dimensions.
Can roofing cement fix an overcut? Not generically. Use cement only for the exact closure role the selected system specifies. Damage to a shingle, liner, flashing, underlayment, or deck follows that system’s written repair route.
