Hyde specifically states that the round end protects workers’ feet from accidental drops and that the shield protects fingers. Hyde does not claim that this knife fits every station, eliminates every puncture or laceration, meets a named food-contact or sanitation certification, supplies required PPE, or converts a facility into compliance.
The conversion method below is authored safety-program and production trade knowledge.
Job: replace pointed knives at suitable recurring stations with the round-tip Hyde 68300 after a drop, stab, puncture, injury, near miss, audit finding, or proactive task review — while proving that the point performs no required work and that the replacement fits the actual process, sanitation system, operator, and station.
Result: every converted station has a documented task, an edge-start method, the exact approved model, a controlled knife path, qualified operators, task-selected PPE, a compatible cleaning and sharpening lane, inspection and issue controls, purchasing protection against substitution, event response, and a rollback path. Stations that still require a point, do not require this tool’s long stroke, or cannot admit its high-carbon-steel and hardwood construction are rejected from the conversion rather than forced into it.
Time: there is no responsible universal conversion time. One stable station with one material and one shift is a different project from a multi-shift plant with rework, sanitation changeovers, seasonal product, and several informal knife uses. The conversion closes when its finite station denominator is observed, decided, piloted where eligible, released, and read back — not when a calendar estimate expires.
Difficulty: cross-functional. The cutting motion may be familiar; discovering all real knife work, distinguishing a used point from a merely present point, controlling product and sanitation consequences, qualifying multiple shifts, and preventing purchasing drift are the hard parts.
Its documented round end and heavy steel shield are relevant engineering features; its cutting edge remains exposed and sharp.
What this conversion is — and what it is not
A round-tip conversion is a hazard-removal project for point-first injury capability:
contain the event → observe the real work → eliminate or engineer away cuts first → identify every use of the point → reject unsuitable stations → pilot 68300 on representative work → qualify people and support systems → remove pointed substitutes → release and monitor → stop, correct, or roll back when evidence changes.
The conversion does not begin with a purchase order. A replacement knife can reduce one hazard and expose another mismatch. The round end refuses a point-first entry; at a station that genuinely needs one, workers may compensate by pushing harder, twisting the blade, jabbing with its belly, changing hand position, or reaching for an unauthorized pointed knife. That is not a failed worker. It is a failed tool-and-task decision.
Nor does “round tip” mean “safe to drop,” “safe to touch,” “cut-proof,” “food approved,” or “compliant.” Hyde’s exact drop claim is narrower: the round end protects workers’ feet from accidental drops. The sharp edge can still cut during a fall, pickup, carry, transfer, cleaning, sharpening, or production stroke. The shield addresses the knife hand’s forward slide; it does not protect the off hand, torso, coworker, or product in the edge path.
NIOSH’s Hierarchy of Controls remains above the product choice. Eliminate the hand cut where possible, substitute a less hazardous method, and engineer stability and separation before relying on procedure and PPE. A station should not retain avoidable manual knife work merely because a safety-pattern knife exists.
Stabilize the incident before proposing a fleet change
After an injury, drop, puncture, near miss, or damaged-product event:
Stop the affected work and adjacent exposure. Put knives into the site’s controlled rest, rack, or quarantine flow without asking anyone to reach through a live blade path.
Start the facility’s medical or first-aid response. Follow trained personnel and the site plan. This guide does not prescribe treatment.
Control the involved knife. Preserve identity and condition. Do not sharpen, clean, discard, or return it until the investigation owner decides what evidence must be retained and sanitation or emergency needs are reconciled.
Control product and surfaces. A dropped, chipped, contaminated, or lost-part knife can create a product-safety or foreign-material event distinct from the worker-safety event.
Record the conditions before they change: station, task revision, shift, operator authorization, exact knife identity, point shape, edge condition, guard or shield condition, handle and rivets, material state, work support, floor, spacing, PPE, pace, last inspection, last cleaning, last sharpening, witnesses, unusual work, and any substitution.
Protect reporting. A near miss is useful evidence only when workers can describe it without pressure to minimize or assign blame. OSHA’s incident-investigation guidance directs attention to root and contributing causes, not merely the action nearest the injury.
Do not convert the entire plant during the first emotional hour after an event. Immediate containment is correct; universal replacement before task review can seed compensating hazards at unrelated stations.
Freeze the denominator — every station and every knife task
Define the conversion population before deciding success. “All cutting stations” is not a denominator until the facility can name them.
Build a station register that includes:
formal production stations on every shift;
setup, changeover, sanitation, rework, quality sampling, maintenance, warehouse, and waste-handling knife work;
knives carried personally, stored in drawers, borrowed from neighboring stations, or purchased outside the normal issue system;
seasonal products, uncommon sizes, jam work, short runs, and supervisor-performed exceptions;
the sharpening room, wash area, rack, tool crib, receiving point, and disposal route;
temporary labor, relief operators, left-handed or non-dominant-hand operation, and language-access needs.
For each station, record:

Walk the work with the people who do it. Observe a representative range of shifts and conditions chosen by the facility. Do not let the written standard operating procedure erase a point-first motion that appears only in rework, or let one expert’s work stand in for the method a relief operator can actually sustain.
The frozen denominator ends with one decision per station:
ELIMINATE OR ENGINEER — the hand-knife task should not survive;
CANDIDATE FOR 68300 — the task needs this pattern’s stroke, begins from an edge, and passes the construction and support-system gates;
POINT-DEPENDENT / NOT THIS CONVERSION — a point performs a named irreducible task and the process has not yet removed it;
WRONG TOOL CLASS — the task is too short, too precise, chopping, prying, boning, skinning, machine-intervention, or otherwise outside this pattern;
No silent omission is a pass.
Analyze the hazards the conversion changes — and the ones it leaves
Puncture and stab
This is the conversion’s primary target. A pointed knife can enter a foot, hand, coworker, or product point-first. The 68300’s round end removes the sharp point. Hyde expressly ties that geometry to protection of workers’ feet from accidental drops. At task altitude, the same geometry refuses a deliberate point-first start. That refusal is useful only where the point has no required process function.
Cutting edge
The edge remains exposed and Hyde describes it as sharp. A round tip does not reduce the long edge’s ability to lacerate. Cut direction, off-hand placement, support, spacing, storage, transfer, cleaning, sharpening, and PPE remain live controls.
Forward hand slide
Hyde states that the heavy steel shield protects fingers. It is a physical stop between the knife hand and edge. It does not make a wet, greasy, damaged, or poorly fitting grip acceptable. Repeated contact with the shield is a warning of excess force, a dull edge, insecure grip, poor stance, changed material, or a wrong task.
Drop and retrieval
The round end changes one consequence of a drop; it does not make the falling knife harmless. The edge can strike a leg or foot, the knife can contaminate product or surfaces, and impact can damage the blade, shield, handle, or rivets. Workers step clear and follow the drop response. They never try to catch or trap a falling knife.
Coworker and overtravel exposure
A long draw occupies more space than the workpiece. Crowding, line orientation, sudden release, and a coworker entering the exit path can defeat the tool’s built-in features. OSHA’s meatpacking hazards guidance treats PPE as one element of a wider hazard-control program; the station still needs spacing and a controlled blade envelope.
Force and ergonomics
A dull edge, unsuitable material, awkward height, poor support, excessive reach, cold work, speed pressure, or a round tip forced into a point-dependent task can increase grip and arm force. OSHA’s Ergonomics Program Management Guidelines for Meatpacking Plants identify good knife care and safe, understood procedures as program elements. The conversion cannot be judged only by puncture counts; force, fatigue, stalls, rework, and workarounds are leading evidence.
Sanitation, corrosion, and foreign material
The exact tool uses high-carbon steel and a triple-riveted hardwood handle. Water and incompatible chemistry can damage carbon steel; cracks, raised grain, loose rivets, corrosion, or trapped soil can make the knife unacceptable. A chip or missing component can create a foreign-material investigation.
Sharpening and tool control
The knife must stay sharp enough to cut without forcing, but sharpening is itself edge exposure. Uncontrolled steeling at the production bench, inconsistent grinding, unauthorized reshaping of the round end, and silent substitution can undo the conversion. The sharpener, method, inspection, cleaning, and issue path are part of the project.
Decide whether a station is suitable
A station can enter the 68300 pilot only when all of these are true
The hand cut survives an explicit elimination, substitution, fixture, and guarded-process review.
The work needs a long butcher-pattern slicing draw; the team is not choosing excess edge merely because the model is available.
Every approved cut can begin at an exposed edge using the heel or forward belly.
No routine, rework, setup, changeover, or abnormal task requires a sharp point.
The material and its released state can be crossed without chopping, prying, twisting, blind probing, or striking the spine.
Work support prevents roll, slide, pinch, closure on the blade, and uncontrolled drop of the separated piece.
The complete stroke, exit, overtravel, drop zone, and coworker space can be controlled.
The facility accepts high-carbon steel, hardwood, rivets, and the actual assembled geometry for the intended process.
The approved PPE allows a secure grip and is selected for the actual cut, puncture, hand, arm, torso, foot, and other hazards.
The site can inspect, clean, sanitize where required, dry, sharpen, store, issue, quarantine, and reconcile this exact model.
Representative workers can perform the method without compensating for the missing point.
Purchasing can prevent an unreviewed pointed or adjacent-model substitution.
Reject or redesign the station when any of these are true
a point must enter the middle of material or reach a defined interior geometry;
workers need to jab, peck, bore, twist, or lever to start or finish the cut;
the work is short and close enough that this pattern’s length only enlarges the hazard envelope;
the material contains hard, hidden, reinforced, frozen-hard, or otherwise unqualified structure;
the knife would be used to clear, reach into, or work around moving or energized equipment;
the product is held against the body, in the off hand’s path, or by a coworker acting as a fixture;
the far-side exit cannot be seen or otherwise controlled;
the facility’s sanitation or customer specification excludes the construction;
the knife cannot be kept clean, dry, sharp, identified, and secured;
the pilot produces force, stalls, poorer control, new quality defects, or unauthorized pointed-knife workarounds.
“Most cuts do not need the point” is not sufficient if one approved task at the station still does. Split the task, redesign the point-dependent operation, or keep the station out of the conversion until the exception has its own controlled solution.

The buyer’s honest sentence is:
Choose 68300 for a qualified station that needs the long slicing edge but has no job for a sharp point, and only after the facility accepts the construction and support system.
Anything broader is advertising over the evidence.
Build the pilot before building the purchase order
Write the hypothesis
For each candidate station:
Replacing the current pointed knife with Hyde 68300 will remove point-first capability without preventing any approved operation, increasing force or workaround behavior, degrading product or quality control, or breaking sanitation, inspection, sharpening, storage, or PPE requirements.
That hypothesis can fail. A serious pilot is designed to find the failure before fleet issue.
Establish the baseline
Observe the current method without rewarding unsafe repetition.
every cut and entry type, including rework and cleanup;
why the point is used when it is used;
edge condition, force cues, stalls, slips, drops, and shield or guard contact;
work support, off-hand location, blade exit, spacing, and floor condition;
product defects, ragged entries, extra strokes, trim, and rework;
cleaning, drying, sharpening, storage, issue, and substitution behavior;
worker concerns and informal fixes;
incidents, near misses, damaged knives, and missing-part history at the resolution the facility can substantiate.
Do not invent a numeric baseline from incomplete records. “No recorded punctures” can mean no events, incomplete reporting, or an unused reporting path.
Prepare the trial
Resolve construction acceptance with safety and sanitation or food-safety owners.
Inspect and identify the exact 68300 trial knife.
Define the representative material and state, including the hardest approved normal case and known rework.
Stabilize the work and clear the full edge, exit, and drop envelopes.
Set the task-selected PPE, knife rest, dirty-tool route, sharpening route, quarantine point, and first-aid response.
Train the trial operator on the round-tip entry method and stop conditions.
Remove pointed knives from immediate reach during the controlled trial so the test measures the proposed method rather than a mixed fleet.
Run the trial at controlled production realism
Begin every approved cut from an exposed edge. Set the heel or forward belly into the entry and draw the edge through the planned plane. Do not jab the round end, grind it into a point, or change to a hidden pointed knife. Park the knife before moving product, measuring, clearing trim, or handling a problem.
The observer watches for:
smooth entry without point substitution;
complete cutting at controlled force;
stable work and predictable exit;
off hand, body, and coworkers outside planned and failure paths;
no shield impact caused by sliding or excess push;
no increase in stalls, short sawing strokes, twisting, re-entry, or fatigue;
acceptable product face, yield, and rework under the facility specification;
secure grip with the approved PPE;
workable cleaning, drying, sharpening, storage, and issue;
correct response to simulated or naturally occurring stop conditions.
Use the facility’s real acceptance criteria. This guide supplies no universal number of trial cuts, shifts, operators, failures, or days. The trial sample must cover the variation the station owner is prepared to release; anything absent remains outside approval.
Decide and record
PASS FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE: all approved work is edge-start, the tool and construction fit, workers remain controlled, and support systems close.
REVISE AND RE-PILOT: the task may fit, but support, layout, PPE, edge maintenance, training, or sanitation needs correction.
REJECT FOR THIS STATION: the point performs real work, the pattern is wrong, construction is not admitted, or compensating hazards remain.
Worker preference matters as evidence, not as a veto on geometry or a substitute for it. Ask what changed in visibility, force, reach, quality, fatigue, and confidence; investigate the mechanism behind the answer.
Issue a station specification that purchasing can enforce
station, task, shift, material and allowed state, and revision;
exact approved model: 68300 — ROUND TIP;
why a long slicing draw is needed;
explicit statement that no approved operation requires a point;
required edge-start location, draw direction, exit, and overtravel;
work support or fixture and prohibited hand-held positions;
knife-hand, off-hand, body, coworker, and drop zones;
PPE hazard-assessment reference and issued configuration;
pre-use inspection, knife-rest, transport, cleaning, sanitation, drying, sharpening, storage, and quarantine method;
authorized operators and qualification scope;
stop and escalation conditions;
product or material hold path after contamination, chip, missing part, or uncontrolled cut;
conversion decision, pilot evidence, approval owners, and next review trigger;
explicit substitution rule: a pointed knife, another round-tip pattern, or a look-alike is not equivalent without a new assessment.
Mark racks and issue points by exact model and tip, not by color alone. A generic “safety knife” label lets the fleet drift back into mixed configurations.
Qualify operators on the converted task
Competency is observed performance on representative work, not attendance at a toolbox talk.
The operator must be able to:
identify 68300 and its round tip without relying only on color or storage location;
explain the exact reason the station no longer permits a point;
describe what the round end and shield address — and what they do not;
inspect edge, round end, blade, shield, handle, rivets, identity, cleanliness, corrosion, and storage condition;
set stable work, clear the full blade and drop envelopes, and place the off hand outside the path;
begin from an exposed edge with the heel or forward belly;
draw rather than chop, pry, twist, or force;
recognize drag, stall, insecure grip, changed material, hidden structure, damaged support, crowding, floor contamination, and a task not on the card;
park the knife before touching product, a gauge, trim, or another tool;
carry, transfer, store, and retrieve only by the facility method;
step clear of a falling knife and run the drop/quarantine response;
stop and report a point-dependent task rather than retrieve an unauthorized pointed knife;
route dirty, dull, damaged, corroded, unidentified, or substituted knives correctly;
demonstrate the injury, near-miss, product-control, and rollback trigger paths.
Qualification records name the station revision, material range observed, exact model, evaluator, successful behaviors, corrections, limitations, and authorization decision. Requalify after a changed task, material, layout, PPE system, knife, cleaning or sharpening method, incident, unsafe workaround, extended absence, or another facility-defined trigger.
Language, literacy, handedness, glove fit, stature, reach, and relief-worker coverage are station-design inputs. Do not certify the average worker and call the variation controlled.
Select PPE from the hazard assessment
OSHA 1910.132 requires covered employers to assess workplace hazards, select appropriate PPE, ensure fit, and train employees required to use it. OSHA 1910.138 makes hand-protection selection depend on the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards. OSHA’s meat-cutting directive on application of 1910.132(a) to the retail food industry documents cut exposure in boning and breakdown work and the role of appropriate hand and body protection in the circumstances it addresses.
The employer decides:
protection for the off hand and whether forearm, torso, leg, foot, eye, or other exposure requires additional equipment;
cut and puncture performance appropriate to the actual task;
fit with each operator and compatibility with a secure grip;
how layered protection affects dexterity, fatigue, and hand placement.
PPE is not a fixture. No protected hand belongs in front of the edge or under a blind exit. A glove that slips on the handle, bunches at the shield, hides damage, or forces a compensating grip fails the pilot until corrected.
Close sanitation, corrosion, and product-control gates
Where food or another controlled product is involved, safety release and sanitation release are separate decisions. Both must close.
Neither rule creates one universal knife-cleaning recipe.
Let the approved chemical label and site procedure own the numbers. Concentration, temperature, contact time, rinse, employee protection, verification, and frequency come from the actual system, not this guide.
Keep dirty, clean, ready, and quarantine flows physically distinct. A floor drop, incompatible-product contact, contamination, or failed status leaves production. An apron wipe is not release.
Include the whole assembly and support system. Blade, round end, shield, handle, rivets, rack, rest, sheath, steel, stone, and fixture must be assessable and cleanable under the program.
Inspect after cleaning. Open grain, swelling, cracks, loosened rivets, corrosion, residue, shield damage, chemical attack, or trapped moisture can turn a cleaned tool into a rejected one.
Dry promptly by the approved method. High-carbon steel can rust.
Control foreign material. A chip, unexplained missing metal, damaged rivet, splinter, or shield damage stops the station and enters the facility’s product hold and disposition process.
The physical gates remain.
Inspect, issue, reconcile, and store the converted fleet
Pre-issue and pre-use inspection
model identity is readable and matches the station card;
round end is intact and has not been sharpened or reground into a point;
cutting edge is continuous, keen, clean, and free of chips, cracks, deep rolls, or unexplained missing metal;
blade is straight and free of unacceptable corrosion or pitting;
heavy steel shield is present, rigid, undamaged, and clean;
hardwood handle is secure, clean, dry, and inside the facility’s criteria for cracks, swelling, raised grain, and residue;
all rivets are present and secure;
actual approved PPE allows a dry, complete grip behind the shield;
knife carries the required clean/released status;
rack, rest, sheath, sharpening equipment, and station support are in their released state.
Quarantine immediately
Quarantine wrong or unreadable identity, any pointed knife at the converted station, unauthorized modification, a round end reshaped into a point, edge or blade damage, loose shield, loose rivet, damaged handle, active corrosion, contamination, failed clean status, unexplained missing material, impact or drop not yet evaluated, or any condition the inspector cannot reconcile.
There is no “use carefully until the replacement arrives” category. Quarantine is a physical location and controlled status.
Fleet accounting
The tool custodian should be able to reconcile:
pointed incumbents removed, retained only in separately authorized stations, or disposed of through the controlled route;
rack and station labels updated;
purchase orders and catalogs locked to the exact model;
every discrepancy investigated before another knife is issued.
Removing points from the station while leaving pointed spares in the same drawer is not a conversion.
Keep the edge sharp without undoing the round tip
The 68300 is a sharp cutting tool by design. Deliberately dulling it to make it “safer” increases the temptation to push, twist, and use body weight. Edge maintenance must be controlled because sharpening is also a laceration and geometry-change exposure.
Authorize and qualify sharpeners separately from production cutting.
Use a stable, designated sharpening station outside product, coworker, and traffic paths.
Identify the exact model and inspect before work.
Follow the approved equipment instructions and facility-set edge geometry. This guide supplies no angle, stroke count, abrasive sequence, or interval.
Preserve the catalog-stated semi-hollow form and the round-end refusal. Do not turn the end into a working point or narrow the shield clearance.
Never test sharpness with a finger.
Inspect for a continuous edge, intact round end, no burr or loose metal, sound shield, handle, and rivets.
Clean, sanitize where required, dry, inspect, and release before return.
Record repeated dulling, unusual force, excessive maintenance, or geometry loss as a process signal, not merely a sharpener workload.
Steel an edge only when the trained method says steeling can restore it.
Roll out by controlled station release
A successful pilot is evidence for the tested station and scope. It is not automatic approval for another material, shift, layout, or knife use.
For each release:
close corrective actions from the pilot;
approve the station specification;
qualify all assigned and relief operators;
install labeled storage, rests, quarantine, and issue controls;
remove pointed incumbents and uncontrolled spares;
update purchasing and receiving;
verify sanitation, sharpening, inspection, first-aid, event, and product-control paths;
observe the first controlled production under the released conditions;
record post-release readback from workers and every responsible owner;
add the station to change control and periodic review.
Release status should remain finite:
denominator stations identified;
eliminated or engineered;
released on 68300;
rejected as point-dependent or wrong tool class;
Monitor leading evidence, not just injuries
Useful conversion checks include:
candidate stations with observed edge-start proof / candidate stations;
converted stations carrying exact model, task revision, and substitution lock / converted stations inspected;
assigned workers qualified on the current station revision / workers performing the work;
knives passing identity, round-end, edge, shield, handle, rivet, corrosion, and clean-status checks / knives inspected;
point-dependent tasks discovered after release;
unauthorized pointed knives or substitutions found;
stalls, force escalations, shield impacts, re-entries, workaround requests, and edge-maintenance escalations;
drops and near misses reported, investigated, and closed;
sanitation, corrosion, foreign-material, and missing-knife events;
product defects, rework, or method changes associated with the conversion;
corrective actions closed / actions due;
worker concerns answered with a documented disposition.
Use exposure denominators only when the facility can measure them honestly. A lower reported-event count can mean safer work, less exposure, or worse reporting. Pair event data with observations, worker participation, tool condition, and corrective-action closure.
Reassess after any product, material state, task, layout, pace, staffing, handedness, PPE, chemical, sanitation, knife, sharpening, storage, fixture, incident, or purchasing change.
Respond to a conversion event
An event includes injury, puncture attempt, laceration, drop, uncontrolled exit, shield impact, stalled or forced cut, hidden pointed substitute, damaged knife, contamination, missing metal, product defect, or near miss.
Immediate lane
stop the task and adjacent exposure;
start first aid or emergency response where needed;
quarantine and identify the knife;
control affected product, surfaces, or material;
preserve task, tool, worker, PPE, material, station, sanitation, sharpening, and change evidence;
notify the assigned owners.

Was the exact 68300 present and unmodified?
Was the edge dull, damaged, contaminated, or recently sharpened?

Correct the system and inspect every materially identical station before restart. “Operator error” is not a root cause and retraining alone is not enough when the tool, support, pace, purchasing, or method invited the behavior.
Rollback without restoring the original hazard by default
Rollback means withdraw the converted station release and return the task to a safe controlled state. It does not mean silently putting the old pointed knife back.

an approved task proves point-dependent;
operators must force, jab, twist, saw, or change grip to compensate for the round end;
product quality, yield, or control fails the facility criterion;
the construction fails sanitation, corrosion, chemical, or customer-specification review;
the long pattern is wrong for the actual stroke;
support, spacing, PPE, cleaning, sharpening, storage, or inspection cannot be sustained;
a conversion-related incident or near miss reveals an unclosed hazard;
exact-model supply or receiving control fails and substitutions cannot be prevented;
the released material, shift, or task changes beyond the pilot evidence.
Controlled rollback sequence
Park and quarantine the affected 68300 fleet by station and status.
Stop the task or move it to an already approved alternative process.
Control affected product or material.
Record which acceptance condition failed and whether the failure applies to identical stations.
Reopen hierarchy review: eliminate, pre-cut, fixture, change layout, use guarded equipment, split the task, or select a different tool class.
If a pointed knife is proposed, treat it as a new, bounded hazard assessment with a named point-dependent operation, not restoration of the old default.
Re-pilot any corrected method.
Update station cards, training, issue, purchasing, sanitation, and records.
Restart only after the responsible owners release the corrected system.
Production pressure does not manufacture evidence.
Buyer tests — can the guide choose 68300 or reject the purchase?
A deep slicing station begins every cut at an exposed edge. The point is never used, and the facility accepts the exact construction. Choose 68300, subject to successful pilot and support-system release.
A station starts one approved cut by piercing the middle of the material. Do not convert that station to 68300 yet. Remove or redesign the point-dependent operation, split it into a separate controlled process, or assess another tool. The round tip’s refusal is real.
The task is a short close trim that does not need a long draw. Choose neither this conversion nor this model merely to obtain a round end. Reassess the tool class; excess edge is a hazard.
The buyer wants a deliberately dull round-tip knife. Reject the premise. Hyde describes 68300 as sharp. Control the task, support, edge, operator, storage, and PPE rather than creating more cutting force.
The plant’s sanitation program prohibits high-carbon steel, hardwood, exposed rivets, or the assembled geometry. Choose neither.
The station’s main concern is a hand sliding forward on a wet handle, but the work still requires a point. Do not claim the 68300 conversion solves the task. Fix grip, drainage, support, edge, PPE, and method; assess the actual point requirement separately.
A dropped pointed knife caused a foot puncture, and review shows the station performs edge-start draws only. 68300 is the exact candidate: Hyde ties its round end to protecting workers’ feet from accidental drops. The drop response, foot-PPE decision, edge exposure, sanitation, and impact inspection still remain.
Workers can complete normal production with 68300, but rework requires jabbing the round end. The station has not passed. Rework belongs in the task denominator. Redesign or separate it before release.
Purchasing offers an unspecified “equivalent round-tip safety knife.” Reject the substitution.
The conversion team has no inventory of personal knives, no night-shift observation, and no sharpening owner. Do not place the fleet order yet. The denominator and two high-risk support lanes remain open.
The station passes cutting trials but the handle repeatedly swells or traps residue under the approved cleaning method. Reject or roll back the station. Physical cutting success cannot override sanitation and inspection failure.
No one can say whether the point is used. Buy nothing yet. Observe the task, including abnormal work. Uncertainty is not evidence for either conversion or retention.
What goes wrong — and the fix
The facility buys first and assesses later. Knives arrive before point-dependent work, sanitation fit, or tool length is known. Freeze issue, build the station denominator, and pilot only qualified candidates.
“Round tip” is treated as “cannot cut.” Operators, supervisors, or PPE decisions relax around a still-sharp long edge. Re-teach the exact benefit and boundary; restore path, storage, transfer, and drop controls.
The round end is forced into an interior start. Workers jab with the belly, twist, or add force. The station failed suitability; redesign the entry or withdraw it from conversion.
The old pointed knife remains in the drawer. Workers switch during difficult cuts and the station becomes unauditable. Reconcile and physically segregate the fleet; control purchasing and exceptions.
Only routine production was observed. Rework, cleanup, a large product, or night-shift setup reintroduces the point. Reopen the denominator and re-pilot the complete task.
A shield is treated as a hand-placement guide. Workers choke up or push until the hand strikes it. Restore full grip behind the shield and diagnose edge, force, material, stance, and support.
The knife is intentionally dulled. Cutting force rises and release becomes abrupt. Restore the controlled sharpening lane; investigate why edge maintenance failed.
The round end gets sharpened into a point. The conversion’s load-bearing geometry is gone. Quarantine, investigate the sharpening method, inspect the entire fleet, and retrain or redesign the maintenance control.
PPE is copied from another station. Fit, grip, cut path, sanitation, and exposure differ. Return to the task-specific hazard assessment.
A glove is used as a fixture. The off hand enters the blade path because it is protected. Redesign support and hand position; PPE never authorizes the trajectory.
The knife is left in a sink or under product. Retrieval becomes an unseen-edge task. Install accessible storage and observe between-cut behavior.
A dropped 68300 returns after a rinse. Impact, contamination, edge, shield, handle, and rivet status are unknown. Quarantine and release through the full program.
Cleaning and drying ownership is split. One team declares the knife clean while corrosion or handle damage goes unseen. Establish a joint sanitary and physical release.
A missing chip is treated only as a maintenance issue. Product may contain foreign material. Stop, hold, trace, investigate, and let the facility disposition owner decide.
The pilot uses an expert on the easiest material. Later workers and harder normal cases reveal force and workarounds.
No punctures are reported, so the conversion is declared successful. Reporting, exposure, edge incidents, force, substitutions, quality, and sanitation are invisible. Use leading evidence and reporting trust.
Rollback means reinstall the old knife. The original puncture hazard returns without a new decision. Stop the task and reopen hierarchy and point-requirement review.
Price or availability decides suitability. Commercial state cannot answer task geometry, sanitation, or safety. Keep live commercial systems outside the technical acceptance record.
The history footnote — from the pointed trade pattern to controlled refusal
The broad butcher knife is an anonymous working pattern, older than industrial safety programs and not attributable to one inventor. Hyde belongs to that Massachusetts edge-tool ecosystem, not to an invented claim of authorship.
The round-tip conversion is a later kind of history: not a new cutting motion, but the deliberate removal of a capability after industrial work made its failure modes visible. The modern conversion therefore lives at the station and fleet levels, not only at the blade tip.
