A loaded roller cover can retain a substantial amount of coating after rolling stops. This removes bulk liquid before the cover is washed. It can reduce the coating that enters the washing stage and can recover usable material when the recovery vessel, coating condition, and project rules all permit that return.

The Decision Before the First Pull
Decide where the expressed coating is going before touching the cover.
Use a clean, project-approved receiving container only when all of the following are true: the coating is still usable, the cover has not picked up incompatible material or debris, the receiving vessel will not contaminate the coating, and the coating or project procedure permits recovery. Orient it so expressed coating will fall into the vessel, not run down the frame, handle, glove, floor, or vessel exterior.
Do not balance the vessel on an unstable ledge or hold it between the knees. If the roller or vessel cannot be controlled without crowding, use a larger protected setup rather than increasing reach or force.
Hook the cut-out onto the cover
Set the half-round cleaning profile lightly against one end of the cover. The goal is even contact across the portion of the roller that the cut-out actually fits. Do not force an undersized profile over the nap, dig the tool into the end cap, or assume that compressing the cover until it fits proves compatibility.

Transfer immediately into the correct cleanup lane
Set the recovered material aside under a cover or other control allowed by its instructions. Wipe drips from the exterior of the receiver using the site's approved method. Then move the roller directly into the coating-specific washing procedure below.
Complete the Cleaning by Coating Lane
Lane A: The exact coating specifies water cleanup
Follow the current label or TDS for water temperature, cleaning additives, sequence, and restrictions. Mechanically unload first, then wash through the depth of the nap rather than judging only the surface. Rotate and flex the cover only as its maker permits so retained coating can leave the base of the fibers and the area near the core.
Water cleanup does not mean unrestricted drain disposal. If the site uses a septic system, do not assume that diluted paint waste is harmless; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises minimizing latex-paint waste and keeping oil-based paints, solvents, and other household hazardous materials out of septic systems.
Lane B: The exact coating names a non-water or proprietary cleaner
Use only the cleaning medium and procedure identified by the coating manufacturer. Read the current label and Safety Data Sheet before opening the cleaner. Apply the required ventilation, ignition control, splash control, and personal protective equipment. Keep containers closed when not actively in use and segregate used cleaner from incompatible wastes.
Do not translate “solvent cleanup” into a favorite shop solvent. Do not substitute a stronger cleaner because the coating is slow to release. Do not combine used cleaners.
