Before anything is poured: decide whether boxing is the right job
Box when a continuous surface will consume paint from more than one can. “Continuous” is the important word. One wall, a connected ceiling, a run of siding seen in one elevation, or the second coat over the same field should not change tint at a can boundary. Cans bearing the same color name can differ slightly because tint-machine calibration, base batches, store adjustments, and production lots vary. A switch made halfway across a wall can dry as a faint band even though both lids say the same thing. Boxing removes that boundary by making the cans literally one batch.
Boxing is strongly indicated when:
two or more separately tinted cans will share the same wall or other uninterrupted field;
labels show different lot or batch identifiers, tint dates, stores, or tint-machine formulas for what is supposed to be one finish;
the color is deep, clean, or highly chromatic, or the sheen is eggshell and above, where small differences tend to announce themselves;
old and newly purchased cans are being reconciled for one job;
the job needs a trustworthy reserve that will match the batch actually applied, not merely another can with the same color name.

Refuse false matches before they contaminate the true ones. Line the cans up and read every label. They must agree on:
manufacturer and product line;
interior versus exterior use;
color name and color/formula code;
coating type — waterborne with waterborne, solvent-borne with solvent-borne;
intended use and any special system designation.
Different sheens do not average into the right sheen. Different bases do not become safer because their color names match. A waterborne gallon and a solvent-borne gallon are not two lots of one paint. Primer is not finish paint. Thinning changes the coating and happens only when the label or technical data sheet authorizes it.
Preserve traceability before the cans disappear into one bucket. Photograph or transcribe every original label and tint sticker. Record product, base, sheen, color name and code, tint formula, lot or batch identifier, tint date/store if shown, and which room or elevation the paint is intended for. Give the receiving vessel a master label before pouring: BOXED BATCH — job / room / surface / product / color code / sheen / date, followed by the contributing can identifiers. If a later failure must be traced, “blue from the garage” is not a record.
Quarantine any can that cannot prove it belongs. Missing label, rust through the container, sour or rotten odor, gelled body, ropey material, frozen-and-broken texture, permanent curds, or a color that looks plainly wrong under the lid: stop. Do not average a suspect can into good paint hoping four gallons will overpower it. Stir the suspect separately, brush a labeled sample beside a known-good can on the same primed scrap, let both dry fully, and compare under the room’s actual light. If the labels conflict or the dry-down does, return to the paint supplier with the records. Boxing is not a correction for spoiled paint or a tinting method.
Choose the vessel by capacity, cleanliness, and the next station. It must be chemically compatible with the coating, clean enough to wipe with a white rag without leaving grit or old color, sound at the bottom and bail, and large enough to leave visible headroom for stirring. A bucket filled to its lip cannot circulate; it can only overflow. If the combined volume leaves no safe mixing space, use a larger verified vessel or divide the batch and cross-blend by repeated transfers between clean containers. Never sacrifice headroom to avoid one extra vessel.
If the job will be production-rolled, the clean boxing vessel can become the grid bucket after the color is uniform. That is the elegant version of the system: one batch, one reservoir, no transfer between color control and application. If the paint will be brushed or poured into trays, keep the boxing vessel lidded and decant working charges from it.
Condition every donor can separately
Open cleanly and inspect before stirring. Walk a friction lid up with short pries around its circumference; do not crease it with one screwdriver heave. Set it wet-side up and keep the rim channel clean. On an older can, lift any leathery skin out whole before a paddle or mixer touches it. A skin does not dissolve back into paint — stirred skin becomes the crumbs that score a roller finish. If it tears, that can will be strained on the way into the box.
Hand-stir paint that is still stirrable with the 47050. Run the 14" wooden paddle down the side, drag it across the floor, and lift the settled layer into the body in a slow figure-eight that visits the perimeter and the wall-floor ring. Fold; do not whip. The done test is not a moving surface. Sweep the bottom until the paddle drags nothing thick, then lift it: the runoff should be one color with no clear binder threads or dark pigment streaks. Dedicate the wood paddle to this color. Dried color lodged in its grain makes it a contaminant in the next batch.
Use the 43420 when a donor gallon is past honest hand stirring. A hard-settled gallon announces itself when the paddle feels a slick, compact floor or brings up dense streamers that do not fold in. Chuck the 43420’s verified 1/4" hex shaft in a variable-speed drill, lower its verified 2-5/8" polypropylene impellers to the can floor, then start at the drill’s low end. Work the floor and perimeter first, followed by slow vertical laps. Keep the head submerged; stop it fully before lifting out. The 43420 is a quart/gallon liquid-paint mixer, not a compound tool, and Hyde’s catalog family row says “Not for use with epoxies.”
Do not let a settled donor pour its formula out of sequence. An unstirred can contributes binder first and leaves pigment on its own floor. The receiving bucket may look blended while its color has been quietly shifted. Scrape the donor’s bottom with the paddle after the pour; if colored body remains, recover it with a small amount of the already-boxed paint, stir it loose, and return that rinse to the batch — not with added water or solvent. Each original can should finish uniformly empty except for its normal film.
Combine, reconcile, and blend
Pour low, slow, and one verified can at a time. Put the receiving vessel on a protected floor, not on a ladder, stool, or unstable bench. A full five is a heavy-container job: keep bulk paint on the ground; use two people when a controlled lift or tip is beyond one person’s comfortable grip; and split the transfer into smaller working containers rather than wrestling a full pail at height. Nothing in this guide licenses carrying or hanging a five — Hyde’s pail-hook line expressly prohibits 5-gallon pails.
Hold the donor close to the receiving opening so the stream falls the shortest practical distance. A compatible Hyde 45970 spout gives a controlled column from a five and is especially useful when boxed surplus later returns to cans, but its thread and lid fit must be confirmed physically before use. Never discover bad fitment with a full bucket in motion. Wipe drips while wet and keep every friction-lid channel clear.
Strain for a reason, not as theater. Fresh, clean cans poured into a spotless vessel do not become better paint merely by passing through mesh. Strain when an opened can carried skin fragments, dried rim chips, brush debris, or other solids; when the donor’s history is uncertain; or when the final finish cannot tolerate one crumb. Use a clean strainer intended for the coating, supported so it cannot collapse into the batch. Pour slowly enough that the mesh drains rather than overflows. Replace a loaded strainer — forcing paint through a clogged one pushes debris or fibers into the batch.
A strainer removes solids. It does not repair spoilage, separate incompatible coatings, correct tint, or remove air whipped in by overmixing. If the material smells wrong, gels, or dries wrong, filtration is not the answer.
Blend by hand only at hand scale. For a modest, freely moving batch that the 47050 can reach floor-to-surface, use the same bottom-first figure-eight as the donor stir: wall-floor ring, center, lift and fold, repeated until every pass feels and looks alike. A hand paddle is legitimate for a usable batch; it is not proof of virtue. When the volume or settlement defeats the wrist, move to the drill tool made for the vessel.
Use the 43430 for an open boxed five of liquid paint. Its verified 17-1/2" × 5/16" hex shaft and 3-1/8" polypropylene impellers are the paint tier scaled to a five-gallon pail. Lower the head to the floor before triggering. Run at the lowest speed that sustains circulation, orbit the perimeter and wall-floor ring, cross the center, then make slow vertical laps. A stationary rotor mixes a column and leaves the outer ring as a separate batch. Keep the head submerged and moving; release the trigger and wait for a dead stop before it leaves the paint. The 43430 is for liquid paint in an open pail and is also catalog-barred from epoxies.
Choose the 46540 when the boxed batch must live sealed, or when steel is the honest tier. The 46540’s verified 1-3/4" welded-steel head is designed by Hyde to fit through a five-gallon pour spout, on a 19" × 3/8" hex shaft; its family is rated for compounds, paints, epoxies, and more. For ordinary architectural paint, its special value is continuity across days: blend the open boxed batch, close the pail, then re-condition through the spout on later returns without reopening the lid. Through a fixed opening, replace the open-pail orbit with patient tilted sweeps and vertical strokes. Do not compensate for restricted geometry with speed.
The 46540 is not automatically “better” than the 43430. Open five, liquid paint, maximum pail-scale circulation → 43430. Sealed-pail access or steel-tier chemistry → 46540. The 46540’s narrow head takes longer in an open five and can channel through material too stiff to circulate. For this guide’s waterborne wall paint, buy on the container workflow, not on the word “steel.”
Mix low-air and stop when uniform. The complete rule is slow, submerged, moving. High speed opens a vortex, draws air down the shaft, and whips bubbles into the paint. Those bubbles become foam in the bucket and pinholes or craters in the drying film. A mixer breaking the surface also slings paint in a ring. “More mixed” is not a quality beyond uniform; once floor drag, drill load, color, and runoff are consistent, stop.
If the batch was whipped, stop working it, cover it, and let the air rise before application; then fold it gently without breaking the surface. Straining does not remove entrained air. Do not add water, solvent, or defoamer as a rescue unless the coating manufacturer specifically directs it. If drill torque rises enough that the body twists in your hands, release the trigger — an architectural-paint batch should not require a wrestling match. Brace a proper drill by its handle, but treat abnormal load as a material or tool mismatch, not a command to squeeze harder.
Prove the batch before committing the wall. Sweep the vessel floor: no dense drag, no unmixed ring. Lift the paddle or stopped mixer: runoff one body and one color. Draw material from the top and near the bottom onto the same primed sample; let the strokes dry. They should match each other. If they do not, keep blending or stop and diagnose. Wet paint can hide a weak mix; the dry-down is the verdict.
Reserve, label, then feed the job
Withdraw the touch-up reserve now — after full blending, before the work contaminates it. Pour a clean portion of the finished batch into a clean, sound container that it substantially fills, leaving only the headspace needed for closure. Do this before a roller, brush, tray, or grid enters the supply. Label it with the master batch record plus BOXED RESERVE, job, room/elevation, exact surface, coat, date, and applicator/nap if known. Preserve the original product and tint information with it.
Never build the reserve from whichever donor can happened to remain unopened; that can is exactly the variation boxing was meant to eliminate. Never pour used tray paint or paint that has hosted a brush back into the reserve. Wall dust, dried flecks, and roller fibers travel one way. The reserve stays clean because it never becomes working paint.
Decant working charges or install the grid — choose one production path.
Keep the boxed batch one batch through the whole surface. Cover it during breaks. Give it a gentle bottom-check stir when returning after a pause and before any color judgment. Do not top it up mid-wall with an unconditioned new gallon: either that gallon was included and blended at the start, or the surface stops at a natural break while the enlarged batch is re-boxed and proved. Finish one wall corner to corner from the same supply.
Close the loop at day’s end. Remove and scrape the grid over the vessel, then clean it while wet. Clean mixers immediately: soap and water for waterborne paint; the coating maker’s named cleanup solvent for solvent-borne material. Do not wash coating or solvent into a storm drain. Wipe can channels and closures clean, seat lids evenly, and store labeled containers upright where freezing and excessive heat will not damage the coating.
Water/solvent boundary: waterborne and solvent-borne paints stay in separate vessels with separate clean tools. For solvent-borne coatings, read the SDS before drill mixing: ordinary brushed drill motors can spark internally, and flammable vapor over an open bucket is an ignition hazard. No sentence in this guide extends any mixer or spout’s chemical-compatibility claims beyond its verified product record.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
A stripe appears exactly where the next can started. The cans were never boxed, or a new donor was added without full re-blending. Let the coat dry; a spot correction will preserve the boundary. Re-box enough paint and recoat the entire surface corner to corner.
The batch is one color at the top and darker at the bottom. Donors or receiving vessel were surface-stirred, not bottom-worked. Return to the floor and wall-floor ring, then blend with slow vertical circulation until top and bottom dry-down samples agree.
One can looked wrong, but it is already in the box. Stop. Preserve all labels and calculate exactly what entered. Make a dry sample from the box and compare it with the approved standard; take the records to the supplier. Do not chase it with improvised tint, water, or another off-color can.
Foam covers the surface after drill mixing. Too fast, head too near the surface, or mixer running during entry/exit. Cover and rest the batch, then fold gently. Do not roll foamy paint and hope the wall releases the air; craters and pinholes are the likely receipt.
The mixer spins a tunnel while paint stands at the wall. Head too small, held stationary, or material too stiff. Orbit the perimeter in an open pail; through a spout, use tilted sweeps and more time. If the coating does not circulate at low speed, stop and select the correctly rated mixer rather than raising rpm.
Dried flecks keep appearing on the roller. Skin or rim debris was stirred in, the vessel or tools were dirty, or the grid carried cured paint. Stop and strain into a clean vessel; clean or replace the contaminated component. Do not use the grid as filtration.
The boxed paint matches, but later touch-ups flash. Color is only half the match. Different roller nap, brush-versus-roller texture, film thickness, substrate porosity, aging, and sheen all show. Use the boxed reserve, the original applicator and nap, and the smallest feathered repair the finish tolerates; on sheen paint, the honest fix may be recoating the whole wall.
There is not enough room to stir without overflowing. Wrong vessel capacity. Stop before mixing. Move to a larger clean vessel or cross-blend in divided batches. Removing “just a little” to an unlabeled random can creates a second color supply and defeats the job.
The five is too heavy to pour safely. It is. Put it down. Use a verified spout, smaller decants, a stable transfer method, or a second person. Never solve a heavy-container problem from a ladder and never hang a five from a pail hook.
The pour spout leaks or will not thread cleanly. Fitment was assumed. Right the vessel, remove the spout, and restore the original closure; clean the spill while wet.
The reserve has crumbs or roller fibers in it. It was drawn too late or working paint was poured back. Strain if the coating itself remains sound, relabel it as contaminated/strained reserve, and do not repeat the mistake: next batch’s reserve leaves before the grid goes in.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
Boxing paint became necessary when paint stopped being mixed for one job at the painter’s bench and became a factory product sold in resealable cans. Sherwin-Williams dates its commercially reliable ready-mixed paint breakthrough to the 1870s (Sherwin-Williams, “The First Paint Revolution”); factory tinting solved repeatability well enough to sell color by name, but never made separate cans physically identical. The container that made multi-can jobs practical acquired its mature closure in George W. Weber’s [U.S. Patent 1,176,007, “Friction-top paint-can”]( filed in 1909 and granted in 1916: wedging friction walls designed to keep a gallon liquid-tight and reclosable. Boxing is the jobsite’s answer to the small variation that industrial paint and industrial containers could reduce but not abolish — open the cans, make one batch, then preserve that batch’s identity in the reserve.
