First, decode what the word “kit” means here
A roller is a three-part machine:
The tray is the reservoir and meter. Its well holds the working paint; its sloped, ribbed ramp spins the cover, distributes paint around the circumference, and returns the excess to the well.
The frame is the bearing and handle. It must match both the cover's width and its core architecture. It keeps the wet cover supported, lets it turn instead of skid, and gives the painter control over pressure and direction.
The cover is the pump. Its width determines where it fits; its nap reaches the surface profile and sets capacity; its fabric determines lint, toughness, finish, and documented coating compatibility.
Only 94022 and 94024 contain all three pieces. The 94020, 47338, and 47354 are useful cover-and-frame assemblies, but calling them complete paint kits would conceal the missing tray. They become working kits only after a correctly sized tray is added. None of the five includes paint, a brush, prep tools, floor protection, or the 9" system a full wall needs.
The package-count trap is equally simple. “Three-piece” on the 94024 means tray + frame + one cover, not three covers. “With frame” on the Hyde 47338 and 47354 means one cover paired with its frame, not a tray-inclusive set. Read the noun after every count before comparing apparent value.
Kit or separate components? Make this decision before choosing a model
Buy a tray-inclusive kit when this is genuinely a first mini-roller job, no compatible tray or frame is already owned, the job fits the included cover, and one-package readiness matters more than tailoring each part. That is the clean case for 94022 or 94024.
Buy components separately when any one of these is true:
the first job is a wall or ceiling, where a 9" system is the proper primary rig;
an existing tray or frame can be reused and only a cover is needed;
the coating calls for a specifically documented fabric or tray chemistry;
the buyer expects repeated work and wants a durable frame, a liner-served tray, multipack covers, or a bucket-and-grid;
a 4" width is more useful than 3", or a full 1-1/2" core is needed to match a 9"-rolled wall;
the job uses more than one color. A separate cover — and often a separate liner or tray — prevents frantic washing and cross-contamination while both colors remain live.
A bundled kit removes fitment decisions, but it does not repeal application decisions. If the included nap is wrong for the surface, the package is wrong no matter how conveniently its parts fit.
The five choices — exact calls, including what is false for each sibling
Choose the 94022 for a first, modest waterborne-paint job on smooth-to-lightly-textured small surfaces: a closet, a utility coat, a door in flat or eggshell, a short trim run, or priming where the finish is not the point.
Concrete statement false for its nearest sibling: the 94022 has a plastic frame and a 3/8" General Purpose cover; the 94024 has a metal frame and a 1/4" Pro cover. The 94022 is the budget coverage kit.
Concrete statement false for the 94022: the 94024 is the only one of these two tray kits with the fine 1/4" nap and metal frame. It is not the capacity choice for a wall, not the right nap for orange peel, and not a guarantee that a poor substrate will look sprayed. A 1/4" cover hides almost nothing.
Choose the 94020 when a 3" tray already exists and the goal is the same utility work served by the 94022. It pairs a General Purpose 3" cover with a plastic frame.
Concrete statement false for the 94022: 94020 does not include the tray. Concrete statement false for the 94024: 94020 does not provide the Pro 1/4" finish cover or metal frame. Its virtue is avoiding a duplicate tray, not somehow doing more with fewer parts.
Hyde 47338 — the 4" woven work-cover bundle, tray excluded
Choose the 47338 when the first small-surface rig should be a 4" Woven-Ultra 3/8" cover with a frame: wider and faster than the 3" kits on trim faces and small panels, lint-free by Hyde's Woven-Ultra family claim, and officially rated across coatings “from latex flats to high gloss epoxies.” Add a 4" tray; none is included.
Hyde 47354 — the full-core 4" blend-and-touch-up bundle, tray excluded
Choose the 47354 when the small roller must lay a film comparable to a 9"-class E-volution setup: touch-ups, punch-list repairs, narrow wall returns, soffit faces, and small panels that sit in the same light as the surrounding wall. It is 4" wide with a 3/8" E-volution microfiber cover on a 1-1/2" core, bundled with the matched frame. An ordinary thin-spindle mini frame will not take that core; buy this framed version first, then use 47353 cover-only refills. Add a suitably sized tray.
Choose by surface, paint, nap, and width — in that order
Read the surface with your hand
Dead smooth cabinet, door, metal panel, or trim: 1/4" is the fine-film choice; among these five that points to 94024.
Smooth-to-lightly-textured drywall, ordinary painted trim, closet, or small panel: 3/8" is the general answer; choose the grade and width next.
Orange peel or light knockdown you can plainly feel: step to 1/2". None of these five supplies it. Buy the appropriate cover, compatible frame, and tray separately.
Heavy texture, brick, block, or stucco: 3/4" to 1-1/4" according to depth and coating. None of these five is a real masonry kit. Pressing a 1/4" or 3/8" mini harder paints the peaks and damages the cover; it does not lengthen the nap.
Read the coating and finish
Flat or eggshell waterborne paint, primer, utility coat: a General Purpose 3/8" kit can be entirely rational — 94022 if a tray is needed, 94020 if it is not.
Waterborne enamel, gloss, or a finish examined at arm's length: 94024's 1/4" Pro system is the tray-inclusive choice. A smooth result still depends on cleaning, sanding, priming, thin coats, and leaving leveling paint alone after lay-off.
Sheen paint or a coating where shed fiber is a costly defect: 47338's Woven-Ultra family claim is the strongest documented lint-free/chemistry case among the five. Add the right tray.
A small wall repair intended to match an E-volution-rolled field: 47354, with the conditional blend boundary stated above.
Oil, alkyd, varnish, polyurethane, epoxy, or any solvent-borne coating: read the coating label and the exact tool claims before choosing. Do not infer “kit” means safe for every chemistry. A metal tray or a specifically documented compatible liner may be the right separate component. Never pre-dampen a cover with water before a solvent-borne coating.
Choose width for the work, not for the package
Three inches earns its place on narrow stiles, casing, baseboard faces, furniture parts, and isolated repairs. Four inches covers a small panel faster and spans wider trim. Nine inches is the wall width. A 3" roller can technically paint a wall, just as a toothbrush can technically scrub a floor; neither is a serious production choice. Start a room kit with the 9" field roller, then add one of these minis for the details.
Match every physical interface
The tray ramp must be at least as wide as the cover. The frame must match the cover's width and core architecture. A 4" tray may serve a 3" cover with some wasted working width; a 3" tray cannot properly load a 4" cover. A standard mini spindle does not fit the 47354's 1-1/2" core. Tray liners are mold-matched, not universal: a liner that bridges or rocks can dump paint between liner and tray. Use the liner named for the tray model or do not use one.
What is missing from a real first kit
The tray/frame/cover set is only the transfer system. Build the rest around the actual job:
For any job: paint matched to substrate and use; stir stick; opener; rags; drop protection; a work light; and the safety equipment named by the paint label.
For edges: a quality angled sash brush and a cut pot. The mini gets closer than a 9" roller; it still cannot draw the ceiling line, enter an inside corner, or paint cleanly against casing.
For adhesion: degreaser or cleaner, abrasive, dust removal, and any required bonding or stain-blocking primer. A finish kit cannot rescue grease, gloss, dust, loose paint, or a bleeding stain.
For defects: stiff scraper for loose material, flexible knife and filler for holes, sanding abrasive to level repairs, caulk only for the joints appropriate to caulk, and spot primer over every absorbent patch.
For a room: 9" frame and correct-nap cover, extension pole, and a 9" tray with a screen or a 5-gallon bucket and grid. The mini is the second roller, not the field machine.
For repeat work: spare covers, a precisely fitted liner system if the tray supports it, a roller-cleaning tool or spinner, and airtight wrapping for an overnight pause.
Paint quantity, recoat time, ventilation, substrate preparation, and protective equipment come from the coating manufacturer; none is supplied or determined by these hardware bundles.
Assembly and pre-use preparation
Dry-fit everything before paint exists. Set the tray on a flat, protected surface. Confirm the cover width clears the tray walls and the frame belongs to that cover. On separate components, confirm core fit without forcing it.
Inspect the frame. The rod or arm must be straight; the handle must be sound; the cover should spin freely without binding, scraping the frame, or wobbling enough to strike a tray wall. A new assembly that will not spin dry will skid wet.
Seat the cover fully. Push it squarely onto its supplied or matched frame until the retaining geometry engages. Do not stop halfway because it “feels tight”; a half-seated cover walks off and paints a curved stripe with one shoulder.
De-lint before loading. Roll painter's tape around a new fiber cover and pull it away, or wash the cover and spin it out. “Lint-free” describes the fabric construction, not the absence of every loose packing fiber.
For waterborne paint, pre-dampen — then remove the water. Wet the cover evenly and spin or squeeze it until merely damp, never dripping. That keeps the first paint load from disappearing into bone-dry fibers. Skip this with solvent-borne coatings and follow the coating maker's tool-prep instructions.
Prepare the paint and surface, not just the roller. Bring paint to a uniform mix. If several cans will share one visible field, box them together so minor batch differences do not split the wall. Finish cleaning, scraping, filling, sanding, dust removal, and priming before the tray is poured; open paint is not the moment to discover unfinished prep.
Protect the work zone. A mini throws less paint than a 9" cover, not no paint. Put the tray fully on the drop cloth, away from foot paths and doors. Keep children, pets, cords, and the swinging end of a door out of its route.
Load the tray and cover correctly
The rolling handoff — where this kit stops and the paint job begins
Cut the edge with the sash brush, then roll the adjacent surface while that brushed band remains wet whenever sheen and job size make hatbanding a risk. Land a fresh roller load on unpainted area, not against the finished edge; distribute it, then work back into the wet paint. Use light pressure. If the cover needs force to leave paint behind, it needs another load or a longer nap — not a stronger arm.
On a door or panel, work complete logical sections, keep the edge alive, lay off in one direction with an almost unloaded cover, and stop touching leveling paint once it begins to set. On trim, the brush owns corners and profiles while the mini lays the broad face. Between coats, cleanup, and storage
Overnight pause with the same waterborne paint: wrap the loaded cover and brush airtight in plastic with the air pressed out. This is a short pause between coats, not long-term storage. Cover or wrap the tray only in a way that cannot collapse into the paint. Never leave an open, loaded tray where it can be kicked, reached, or mistaken for clean.
Final waterborne cleanup: return usable paint according to the coating label and local practice; work excess from the cover back into the tray first. Wash the cover in warm water with a small amount of soap, working from the surface down to the fiber base until the water runs clear. Spin or shake out the water and stand the cover on end to dry; drying on its side creates a flat spot that stamps the next job. Wash the frame before paint locks the cover to it. Wash the bare tray completely, or lift and dispose of a compatible liner under the coating and local-disposal rules.
Solvent-borne cleanup: follow the coating label and safety data sheet for the named solvent, ventilation, fire control, and disposal. Do not improvise a water wash, and do not pour solvent waste into a drain. At low tool value, a cover may rationally be treated as a consumable; the decision does not excuse unsafe disposal.
Store the clean frame dry and straight, not buried under weight that bends the rod. Keep covers dry, dust-free, and uncrushed. Before reuse, spin-test the frame and feel the cover for a hardened band at the core; dried paint inside the pile makes a roller that looks clean but prints a repeating stripe.
What goes wrong — and what the failure tells you
History — the kit is packaging; the roller and tray are the inventions
There is no defensible inventor of the “paint kit” as a retail bundle. Putting a tray, frame, and cover in one package is merchandising: useful, but not a new painting mechanism. The mechanisms arrived in sequence.
The modern ramped tray followed because a brush can load from any pot but a roller needs a shallow well and a surface that turns and meters the cylinder. The disposable liner came later: Thomas L. Hardwick's [U.S. Patent 3,157,902, “Disposable paint tray liner,” filed in 1963 and granted in 1964]( states the same problem liners solve now — cleaning a tray between uses and colors. Covers, liners, deep wells, wheels, and ladder mounts changed the system around the roller; the basic first kit remains Breakey's cylinder and frame plus the ramped pan that made it practical to reload.
